Until Death: Part Fifteen
I’m sorry to be posting this one in the afternoon but as you can see, it is a big page.
It would seem the immediate threat of the Rot is dealt with and The Librarian and Caretaker receive a small measure of justice. For those worried about the fates of Beatrice and Professor Brant? Monday.
Shivers and goosebumps, that is all I can say.
Not to be an asshole or overly critical, but I seriously just can’t follow the CoC storylines. I guess they just don’t hold my interest. I like what you do with them, for what they are, but I’ll definitely be glad to get back to the world and see what’s going on with Brian.
Namederp, I meant Sam.
Comments like this do nothing but discourage and cause the creator to second guess. It can keep them from trying new things from fear it won’t be well received.
Speaking as a fellow reader, if you’re not digging the flavor of the strip during a special arch, then just bow out for a while. There’s clearly a large group of folks that are loving this…I just don’t see the point.
Let me clarify before it can be misconstrued. I just don’t see the point it voicing that kind of negative opinion about a comic and artist you obviously like.
Yeah, i have to agree with Matt Roberts on this one. I know i’ve been tempted to voice my disdain on several other webcomics, but i restrain myself, especially when others are enjoying whatever arc is goin on. I just leave, come back and if it’s still not to my liking, leave again.
I’m not going to shit on an artist’s work because I don’t like it; they obviously do which is why the posted it, and I’m simply a guest.
I’ll actually stick up for Ryu on this one. As someone who has been a gamer of some sort or another since puberty (now 30), I freaking love this comic, and read religiously. That being said, I’ve never really been introduced to CoC or the Lovecraft mythos, and as such have a lot of trouble following the IGS arcs. I get the general big stuff, but really struggle to understand the finer points of the IGS arcs.
Then again, this is actually pushing me to go find myself a proper introduction to Lovefraft.
I picked up the complete work of Lovecraft at Barnes and Noble, one of those Hardcover complete books for $20.
It’s all available online for free download- Public Domain, folks. Fire up those Kindles and do some searching.
We don’t all have to enjoy the same thing. I love them because he puts a nice spin on the Mythos that I enjoy. like Matt said, if you aren’t enjoying an arc waiting a month should take care of it.
Secondarily Dewey Decimate system was hilarious.
I’m with Ryu on this story arc. I enjoy the artwork, and each individual strip, but I really don’t know what’s going on. I found the site a while back, and had to do some catching up, so I got to know the main characters in the comic. I mostly know their personalities, and when they’re around the table, their characters resemble them for the most part, physical and personality wise. I can keep up with that.
For this session of IGS, I couldn’t tell you who’s around the table, or any of the characters in game. There’s not much lead up to introduce a whole new group of people, and for side stories like this, there probably doesn’t need to be.
I couldn’t tell you who Sam is playing, or who the girl with the squid on her head is at this point, but once this arc is over, I’ll probably go back and read it all over again to try and make some sense of it. Perhaps all in succession, it will stick with me, and the static of real life hasn’t made me forget everything in between posting days.
That being said, I still really enjoy the webcomic; IGS hasn’t put me off of it one bit, and I want nothing more than to have something to come back to on the regular.
Hey Ryu (and a few others in this thread), it’s totally cool.
First, no one is being a super-dick about it and I appreciate that. I know from time to time I will deviate from the norm to explore something that challenges or excites me creatively (like this arc) and not everyone will offer the arc hand jobs behind the gaming store. Such is the nature of creative pursuits, tastes, and all that.
Now Matt is right in that such comments do make me wonder if I am doing the right thing. However, I am happy to say that people voice their opinions on both sides enough to keep me grounded. Sure, I am going to make the comics I want to make but everyone has their moments of doubt and I am no different. Don’t take that as me calling you out or anything for having an opinion, like I said, I appreciate them even when it is not overly positive. It gives me a temperature of folks out there reading.
I appreciate the nice follow-up despite not being into this arc. If I can at least entertain people with the quality of art, I take it as a small victory. This arc has been a real camper-eating bear.
As for Sam, well, that is coming next week and there will be developments.
Thank you, Brian, for the intelligent and honest reply. Please, do what works for you. You can’t please everyone. I gave my honest criticism because these arcs make my eyes gloss over.
I still respect you as an artist and a writer, and I still like you’re comic. A good artist of any kind needs criticism (hell, a good person needs criticism). It’s annoying, it’s hard, and it sucks, but we’re better people for the good and the bad.
So, thank you Brian, for giving us your imagination. I’m not leaving, or bitching, or pouting and whining. It’s cool, do your thing.
I’ll agree that I feel pretty much completely lost on the IGS story arc (this one more than the earlier one), but I’m just going along for the ride. There has been some really cool art, and I get the impression that the characters are probably really interesting… but I don’t understand who they are or what they’re doing or anything like that.
However, I plan to re-read the arc in one sitting once it’s finished, and I’m guessing it will make more sense at that point.
So, keep doing your thing, Brian! Your fans aren’t going to abandon you just because they don’t understand a particular set of comics. And hey, awesome art for everyone, whether they get the story or not!
Brian, this set literally took my breath away. I held it all the way through and found myself gasping at the end. This series has some of the best artwork you’ve done to date, as well as awesome storytelling.
whuff… is their GM actually George RR Martin in drag?
No, they’re just playing Call of Cthulhu. The original creator of which had no problem as a GM dropping you in a pit to die or destroying an entire wing of a hosptial in order to try to kill one of the PC’s. It’s a deadly game.
Absolutely. Fantastic.
I love your in game story arcs. They’re just astounding.
Though it be at great cost, the IGS doth claim another victory!
Note to self: Don’t piss off the librarian.
Man, today’s strip is so full of win and epic. IGS is one of my favorite story arcs in the whole comic, thanks for making an awesome tale Brian! Ć¢ā¢Ā„
Huh, I just noticed her right hand is missing. I had to go back and I guess when we first saw her, I thought her arms were crossed and just missed it. Hand of Glory, maybe?
On a side note, I understand that CoC is not for everyone, but I’m loving these! More, please! š
The Hand of Glory is generally the left hand of a hanged man, but YMMV (Your Mythos May Vary)
Monday? ‘Kay. I can be patient. Yep, yep, yep. Totally patient.
*twitch*
Rather new reader here, but I wanted to say Im seriously digging your comic. Randomly found it earlier in the week at work and have devoured the entire thing. The IGS arcs are pretty sweet as well. Loving the idea of the caretaker and guardian in the library.
Keep it up š
