Is the feedback you get really this petty? I honestly feel for you Brian, but from those of us who don’t give a shit about trivialities: Keep up the good work!
It’s not a triviality. The lack of background details is actually a proper artistic choice here, when the focus is on the characters, and this kind of thing can be seen in countless examples of comic work done by world-famous comic artists.
Anyone who thinks there’s something “wrong” because they can’t see the shelves in the background is not paying attention to the art form. They probably complain about comics where a panel only shows a silhouette, too.
Brian, I feel your lack of detailed backgrounds really draws attention to what your characters are doing, so continue to do so, when you feel it necessary.
“Ayup. Clyde. Looks like he was beaten,” *sunglasses with a broken lens* “to a pulp.”
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!

Been there, done that. Still do. There’s a small handful of people I can’t make those lies to though; either I feel TOO guilty, and cough up the truth, or they can see through it and don’t accept my BS. Good people.
Aye, we all experience things that we don’t want to share because it hurts too much at the moment, and so we make a plausible lie to try and move things along and deflect from what is actually bothering us.
My next go-to answer in Sam’s particular situation would be: “But he said ‘This here holler ‘ain’t big enough fer botha us!’, and I thought he was challenging me to a fight!”
*stares at the wreckage for a moment…*
“I think I won, don’t you?”
I can’t really get on you for the backgrounds thing primarily because I am not perceptive enough to notice when they are gone. I choose to believe that this is because the dialogue and character art is captivating enough on its own.

OK first off it SHOULD read ‘I find your lack of detailed backgrounds disturbing.’
Then the response SHOULD be a dignified ‘Suck my dick.’
Brian, I feel your lack of detailed backgrounds really draws attention to what your characters are doing, so continue to do so, when you feel it necessary.

Just tell the critics to go read xkcd or cyanide & happiness if they don’t like your art style!
