random guess, but I have to make it. If Karthun is, in fact, quite real…it makes sense that Clive’s benefactor is from Karthun. It would still have to be someone who would hold a grudge against Brett, since the voice that greeted Clive when he first got to this place said that he hates Brett almost as much as ‘she’ does.
So I want to call it now: Dwayla. Out of anything I’ve seen in Karthun, the way she was ‘dealt with’ seemed to be too easy for someone so devious and crafty.
And if anyone could pull off not only coming back from what was certainly death, and also hold a meta-grudge against not only the players of the campaign but the DM running it himself, I would put it to her.
Frankly, if the patron had be a ‘he’ I would have guessed the sultan for similar reasons.
I am quaking with anticipation to see if I’m correct or not.
For some reason I’m thinking Egnizian, or another of the World Walkers.
Maybe it’s the whole “pink-purple fiery glowy” thing the power conferred by them seems to have. Also weren’t they meant to be able to cross realities or something like that?
Just tossing that into the mix for now. Happy to wait and see. 🙂 *munches popcorn*
If we’re setting up a sweepstake for the identity of the Big Bad, I’m going for the Grin: summoned into the world by Sam’s imagination, never actually stopped due to TPK.
Out of curiosity, since it was never fully explained, what ARE the abilities of a mantle bearer? Just the general abilities since I’m positive that each unique mantle has its own special set of abilities. Also, is it possible for someone to hold more than one mantle? For example, if valentine’s day had a mantle and there was no bearer could another mantle bearer temporarily pick it up to fulfill its duties?
The only thing I can think of that could grant powers like this, rival the King of Seasons, and would hate Brett specifically and the group in general… it’s Acererak.
This has been an insane ride from the beginning from Ricky Scraggs to Larry being a house plant to everyone but Sam to Santa and everything. I never expected Santa brawling a vengeance seeking Elf with Wizards and trolls involved.
here is the Kundrok from Karthun that was in service to the magebound qesh’nax – nearly identical to Urlson and Olgon – also the realization that made Sam catatonic:
♫It’s the end of the world as we know it.♫
Oh dear. I rather suspect we’re about to meet Clive’s “benefactor”.
Agreed! One hell of a weekend cliffhanger, can’t wait to find out who the power behind Clive’s recent upgrades belongs to!
I’m just seriously hoping he doesn’t go all “No Context Theatre” on us for next week! I’d blow a blood vessel from anticipation! (j/k)
No way. It is full pages until the end.
I would totally respect you for pulling a fake out by posting an old, unpublished panel 2-3 hours before the real page one day.
Sure, I’d also be going nuts over the cliffhanger, but I’m pretty sure I’d laugh when it was all over.
Speaking of the end, is Innsmouth Garden Society still coming next? I’m extremely excited for it.
Yep! End of October.
So we’ve got around 18 or so pages left then?
Does the benefactor’s speech remind anyone else of a magebound?

Have all mantlebearers special healing powers? Because Brett looks pretty destroyed here.
Not all of the Mantlebearers have the ability to heal more quickly over time, but as we have seen in previous battles Brett does have this ability.

“You stole my big green demon face. I had that copyrighted. My lawyers want a word with you!” 😉
If Brian is doing a Checkov’s gun, I keep thinking back to Mel. Why bring her in just for that interaction at the restaurant?
If not her, I have a feeling it’s a personification of when Sam went dark and tried to kill off Mel’s character after he got beat up by her boyfriend.
Maybe Evil Sam did more damage than we thought?

I’ve been trying to work out Clive’s transformation
here he is killing the Easter Bunny – powerful but physically much like his old self:
https://d20monkey.com/comic/christmas-2015-epilogue-part-two/
here he is making his bargain w/ the powerful being that summoned him – “with us you will have what you desire most”

here is the Kundrok from Karthun that was in service to the magebound qesh’nax – nearly identical to Urlson and Olgon – also the realization that made Sam catatonic:

conclusion – Clive is Magebound to something necrotic, possibly the “She” from Clive’s bargain is the Mother of the Dead from Karthun:

I’m sure Mel comes into it somewhere. Here’s Sam stat’ing Grey as an undead warrior with smoking purple eyes

I screwed up a link.
