Sketchy Ideas
aaaaaaaaaaaand d20Monkey returns!
I hated being away. Truly.
This comic is one of a handful of things in life that gives me pure joy and not being able to create for myself and all of of you nearly killed me. That’s not being melodramatic, I was pretty low there at times while confined to my recliner. You have been understanding, supportive, and patient. I know it is kind of hokey in some people’s opinion to tell your audience that they mean a lot but that has never stopped me.ΓΒ I wasn’t in a nice place for a while but for each and every one of you who sent me kind thoughts, get well cards, jokes, Christmas presents or cool gaming things to talk about, I cannot thank you enough (the list is too long and I would hate to miss anyone). You encouraged me to get healthy and come back. It means the world to me and I will never forget it.
To the one guy who said I made it all up because I am a “lazy cartoonist”: You can still blow me. Forever.
Now, let’s get back to business. As you can see, I am picking up right where I left off and I am presenting a Christmas arc in February. Am I worried about that? Nope. I will say that I did do a little bit of a rewrite on the arc but I believe it will be for the better and falls in line with some long-term plans I have cooking.ΓΒ It is going to be a good year for d20Monkey and I am excited to show you what I am planning. It’s time to shake up the status quo a little bit. I hope you’ll stick around to see what comes next.
Thank you all so much for reading and being here. I’m happy to be back.
– Brian
COMMENTERS: What is the coolest game you played during the hiatus?
It’s all about presence!
Welcome back!
Thank you, kind Sir!
Ahh it’s good to have you back. And another comic I read Shotgun Shuffle hasn’t even finished it’s Christmas shopping arc. So I think you still golden so long as there’s snow on the ground.
Glad you are back. Been missing this.
That put a smile on my face. I hope to deliver with the rest of this arc as I shake off my rust.
Santa Prism Power, Suit-up!
More of a lurker, but happy to read your recovery is going well.
Welcome back.
Welcome back! Glad to see you’re feeling better. That one guy, he’s a douche of the highest caliber.
Welcome back! I’ve been obsessing about Blockwick on the iPhone, and our Pathfnder group rent the fabric of reality last week!
Welcome back, Brian! Good to see you back on your feet. Er, comic. You know what I mean π
I like how Brett has been thinking up ways to spice up the Santa gig.
On gaming: Been catching up on “The Last Remnant”. I love my fantasy titles…
Welcome Back!
Best day EVAR! Welcome back Brian F’in Patterson! Christmas in February is the bomb! Woohoo!
In all seriousness, now my world is back in order. I have missed your comics. Other comics did not fill the void. Alcohol didn’t help. Socializing with others made no difference. Now that you have returned I will look forward to your christmas arc that you hyped and then evil knee grinched you. Happy Belated Christmas!!!!
HAHA! Thanks Jeff!
Glad to have you back. This comic’s awesome.
We missed you! Coolest Game? Bravely Default’s demo. Pretty damn awesome.
Welcome Back
He’s back! Wohoo! Hope the knee is doing fine and welcome back good sir!
I am just happy you are alright now. π
All hail the return of
*checks profile*
Brian!
Kidding but glad to see you making new comics. Hope you’re doing well.
Whoop, the triumphant return!
Being a grinch I don’t generally even like Christmassy stuff at Christmas, but under the circmstances I’ll look the other way, just glad to see your back in business π
Coolest video game: Bought myself a Vita and been loving Frobisher Says and Persona 4 Golden.
Coolest board game: Mage Wars, anything that lets you take the role of competing sorcerers in a fight to the death (complete with your own spellbook) gets my vote!
YAY! Who says you can’t have Christmas in February π
Glad to see you back in the…table? Back at the pen? Uh…well anyways. WELCOME BACK!
Over your regrettably necessary hiatus, while we were holed up from a snowstorm, I DM’d Pathfinder for the first time. For my wife, brother-in-law, and their parents. My brother-in-law is a whiz 4th ed DM, and my in-laws were complete n00bs. Somehow it worked out.
the family that slays together, stays together. π
That sounds awesome though. I love it when you can run a game for folks who do not ordinarily game. One of the wives of a player in my Pathfinder group has caught the gamer bug and every week gets more and more into gaming. It is beautiful to watch.
Good to see you back! If that’s Higgins, will Brett be adding Hawaiian shirts to the official outfit?
And maybe a couple reindeer named “Zeus” and “Apollo”? π
Welcome back!
Haven’t played any new RPGs lately (will play Dread tomorrow, though…mainly thanks to the d20 Monkey Dread arc), but Star Trek Attack Wing is a really cool game. Even for someone with a low tolerance for planning and strategy such as me.
Dude, glad you are back and ready to roll!
Sorry, no games, just life and all the fun it entails… π
You’re Back! WOOOOT!
Glad to have you back!
Welcome back! Best way to start a Monday morning, thank-you.
Yay!!!!
Congratulations on your triumphant return!
Thanks Hans!
Dude, it’s great to have you back. Glad to hear you made it through the wilderness, and we’ve all been waiting here for you. Keep on keeping on. And by far the best game I have played during your hiatus was the new FateCore adapted for Star Wars.
So delighted to have you back. What will the update schedule be as you continue to recover, if I might ask?
cheers,
Phil
3 days a week as normal! I have a little bit of a buffer built up and I want to extend it.
Welcome back!
Hands down, Dungeon World. That game has legs and it just keeps moving!
Isn’t “lazy cartoonist” kind of redundant? Like “lazy mathematician”? I mean, if we weren’t lazy, we’d be digging ditches for a living. Or running for fun. Or some stupid shit like that.
Nooooow…allman left, and dos-e-do. Swing your partner, and all hands in!
So should I play the role of the angry, relentless fan that has nothing good to say just to get that out of the way?
Welcome back, man… Look forward to many more!
Great to have you back, Brian! Can’t wait to see what you’ve cooked up.
Welcome back!!! I was giddy when I saw the update on Facebook last night. No lie.
Game-wise, Mechwarrior Online, baby. Can’t get enough of it!
Welcome Back Brian!
And to answer your question, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Also began DM’ing a Star Wars Edge of the Empire game. The system is growing on the group and I. Once we got over our aversion to the custom dice, we ended up loving it.
I look forward to enjoying all that you have in store for us.
I feel like we should be reforging a broken sword and shuffling you off to Gondor with an undead horde in tow. Or possibly strapping a chainsaw to your leg. Hail to the king!
Welcome Back!!! I can’t wait to see what you have in the works for this year!!
I was shocked to see a new comic! Excited! Ecstatic! I may have peed a little…
Welcome back, congratulations, and well done.
I am so glad you are feeling better. I know it is hard to not do what you love, and I am grateful that you love this comic because that is what makes it so good. Keep getting better.
Yeah! Glad your feeling better!
I must say, when I looked at my RSS reader this morning and saw a (1) next to d20monkey it made my entire day.
Welcome back! Glad you’re feeling better. Christmas in February is okay by me. π
Welcome back! Glad to see you’re sticking with your idea to just pick up where you left off. I’d hate to have to wait a whole year to get an ending to Christmas arc, I don’t do cliffhangers well.
As to games, just recently started playing sessions of the Song of Ice & Fire RPG: Game of Thrones Edition. The editing and organization in the core book are pretty lacking, but the system itself isn’t bad. Also been playing a lot of Starbound on the PC front. People keep complaining it’s just Terraria in space, but I don’t see why that has to be a bad thing.
Folks asking what I have been playing lately: I am absolutely in love with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. It is a fantastic game and one of the best ways to experience Golarion and the Adventure Paths short of playing full on Pathfinder.
“I feel so happy, I must do the Dance of Joy!”… 20 points to everyone who correctly identifies THAT quote…
Seriously though, Hooray Hooray Hooray! Welcome Back! I never doubted your story, your reasons, or you!
STANDING TAAAALL! On the wings of my dreams. RISE AND FAAAALL! On the wings of my dreams…
I was going to withdrawals rereading over and over again. So glad that you are doing better and that the recuperation went fast.
Glad your back at the board. Best wishes on your health, wealth, and crit confirmation rolls. Thanks for doing what you do.
Also. Playing a new level one Orc Brawler in Pathfinder. Playtesting the new classes coming out.
Just discovered this comic the day after your accident report. I was so bummed! Very excited your back and looking forward to it (after binge reading the entire archive in a day).
Over the break I started playing 13th Age, and I fricking LOVE it.
I’ve been playing the shit out of Lords of Waterdeep on iOS.
You’re back! I’m so very very happy! I’ve missed this excellent comic and it’s so great you got better.
Welcome back, Brian. The interweb is a better place with you on it. I know a lot of other people who feel the same way.
Finally got into Catan and boy, I did NOT know what I was missing. Such an excellent game.
FFG’s Star Wars Edge of the Empire is absolutely fantastic. The special narrative dice make each roll matter and filled with potential awesome. Great combination of crunchy mechanics and story focused games. Not to mention it is gorgeous.
FFG’s Star Wars game is a COMPLETE ATROCITY and insult to RPGs. What a HORRIBLE set of mechanics.
“Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed”
If the developers at FFG had any brains at all, they would have gone with a viable core set of rules like d20 modern.
Welcome back!
Yay welcome back! I diligently checked in frequently to see how you are going π
And I certainly appreciate that!
Oh and I forgot my coolest game: it wasn’t just one game I guess. I got my hubby an Oculus Rift for Christmas so we both took turns playing various games with that.
Glad to have you back! I am really looking foreword to seeing where you take the comic.
Pierced?
Great to have you back, Brian! I’ve been following your comic since I met you and bought your first book at GenCon this past August. Excellent stuff, man!
YAY!!! It’s BAAAAAAACK!
Also 13th Age is totally the bomb. I’m basically a 13A missionary now.
Moving on as if nothing happened. Fantastic! Was worried we’d miss out. Another webcomic I read is still prepping for Halloween 2013.
Oh, & I played Gone Home, did not expect the ending to be some “real” & bitter-sweet.
Also got to experience Shadow of the Colossus (genuinely regret not getting a Playstation sooner)
Played some other stuff but those two were the best!
Normally I’m jus’ a reader that never posts, and may never again…but very excited to see a new d20. I’ve been checking daily. I hope you’re doin’ well after everything, and I’ll continue to keep clickin’ here at least daily.
As for games played, I’m in the Lords of Waterdeep crowd. Me and the roomies have been playin’ the hell outa that since it’s release and I enjoy the expansion. For those bored of the base set, try it with the expansion, whole new dimensions of play.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Welcome back Brian! Glad your feeling better!
Welcome back Brian!
The coolest game I’ve played is a d20 hack of WOW that a friend of mine put together. It’s his own spin on some of the things D&D Next is doing. We’ve been having lots of fun exploring Northrend so far.
Hey! Welcome back!
As glad as I am to be able to read your wonderful stories again I am most glad that you are now feeling well enough to go back to doing something that you enjoy. Just dont push yourself too hard on our behalf. Take your time. These stories are worth the wait.
As for games, I have been playing a lot of Borderlands 2. I have beaten it multiple times but keep going back for more.
My friends and I finally put our collective foot in the Pathfinder door, but holy hell, welcome back. I missed these comics so goddamn much it ain’t even funny.
I’m glad to see you are back and continuing from the last comic. I was worried you’d do a time jump. However, I hope this doesn’t mean you will ignore the Christmas arc at the end of this year π
The coolest game I played? Hmm. Persona 4 Golden. Someone gave me a Vita for Christmas, so now I have a portable RPG device.
Never! There will be a 2014 arc.
Good. the Christmas arcs are always some of my favorite comics during the year.
Brian, great to see you back at it!
well, i’ve been playing alot of games! a few i am not allowed to speak of due to NDA…. but here’s the ones i can! Neverwinter, Planetside 2, World of Warcraft, Dragon Age Origins (for the 50th time), Skyrim, Runescape, APB:Reloaded, Natural Selection 2, Stronghold 2, Stronghold Crusader Extreme, Poke’mon Yellow, Minecraft, and a more π
Good to see D20 back up and running! Glad you are doing better.
18 days late to the party I may be, but WELCOME BACK!!!
For a second I thought that was an Optimus Prime Santa Suit in the second panel. And now I want and Optimus Prime Santa Suit.
I want video of Brian mastering that dance…
