Sam, this is not the old “shirtlord” Brett you’re talking to, but the new “brings cheer and joy to every child on Earth once every year” Brett.
I mean, he’s frelling SANTA CLAUS. He literally has the ability to know what each and every player both wants, and _needs_, out of the game – making it a hell of a lot easier for him to actually _deliver_ those things.
…
Done right, this game could be exactly what Sam needs to re-inspire his own GMing. It really could.
I’m so hoping that Brett noticed Sam’s reaction, and brings sam into the circle that is the planning stage. with full veto power. anytime you are using someone elses home grown setting you need to ensure they are in the loop.
Im a regular reader now but havent had the time to do a full archive cover to cover read. Can someone point me to where I should start to catch up on the backstory behind Sams reaction?
I don’t think there’s any single arc that would point to this reaction…Sam’s had some bad stuff cooking for a while. I think it’s more he’s just worried about someone messing around with something he made.
2e had some of the greatest modules and stories. It also had the largest collection of additional rules that ever existed. . . Ravenloft, Planescape, Spell jammer, Al-Qadim, Dark Sun… so many epic options to add to a new world… hope he isn’t running Apocalypse Stone… I stopped talking to my DM for a month after that plot twisting ending.
I was reading some of those when doing a huge sort out of my PDFs and yeah I agree. I am tempted to add some touches of those to my Pathfinder homebrew just for shits and giggles.
I… can understand Sam being hesitant and terrified. Brett has changed but he has spent and entire life playing with old Brett… the one who made children cry when running games in a classroom, the one who criticized him up and down for homebrewing, the one who threw tantrums. He has changed but… I think we should be able to understand Sam’s fear. That setting is his baby and the others are one thing but Brett?…. yeah…. he will have to adjust.
Sam, trust Brett. He’s grown so much.
And not just in girth!!!

Every campaign world needs a proper stress test. This is Karthun’s
truth
Sam is still in a bad place so I don’t see this going well

Some quick hits though on some of Sam’s hard time though and Karthun (in chronological order):

Okay…this list is getting long…I’d really push working through the archives….it’s quite a ride

Can we discuss Brett’s low-key Santa shirt with the candy cane emblem on the breast? No idea why but I really want that.
Also, poor Sam. Feel for the guy.
This is a polo I would buy like… three of.
So it his a polo, or bowling shirt?
I *think* it’s a bowling shirt (or something like it) because in the first panel it looks to me that the buttons go down all the way.
It is indeed a bowling shirt!
Brian – let me know your shirt size and address to make this a reality.
I tried looking for a shirt like this, but only found a lot of red/white striped shirts. >.<
Personally, I really like Dark Sun, and I think a Karthun/Dark Sun mashup could have some really cool ideas.
Hey, at least Brett isn’t going the ‘your characters wake up with amnesia’ route, right?
… Right?
Hmmmm…. There are a number of Exceptional 2e Modules. I am intrigued.
