All sorts of wonderful complications you could do downstream from this. As always, thank you for the wonderful story arc, Brian. Will be interesting to the wrap up from here.
Calvis’ “wife,” a marid who in defiance of how the story normally goes has extracted 3 wishes from him, rather than the other way around. Her second wish started the heist told in the “Vault of Deknar” arc, which ended with Deyla (Charlie’s previous character and Annabelle’s dearest friend) being taken over by a divine artifact.
So, did she roll a crit there, or was dwayla incapacitated enough to be coup de grace’d and thus the attack was an auto crit? I guess 3 breaths from dying implies she’s unconscious and making her 3 death saves, with her speaking just being for flavor reasons, and thus it would be a coup de grace. (though admittedly I’m less familiar with the 5e rules for that sort of thing.) I don’t *think* the sword actually imprisons souls from a rules standpoint sadly. Ah well. I don’t think djinn can even be rezzed normally anyways, and this setting has even more wacky stuff with that, so goodbye Dwayla. Her being royalty might be an issue long term though.
Assuming this campaign uses 5e, Annabelle I believe is a Rogue with the Assassin sub-class, which gets an automatic crit against any creature that’s surprised or otherwise not expecting an attack. Plus Sneak Attack damage if the Nine Lives Stealer is considered a finesse weapon.
Oh, and also: “Incapacitated” doesn’t only mean “unconscious”. You could be laying there, conscious but unable to do more than *maybe* moan in pain, bleed, and wonder if that bit over there is your spleen, or something even more important.
You gotta love it when serendipity and the perversions of dice come together is such a beautiful dance. It couldn’t have come out better even if it was planned by an evil mastermind of a webcomic writer and artist.
YES!!!!!!! GOD FUCKIN’ DAMNIT YES!!!! God damnit this is the perfect end.
FATALITY!!
THE LIFE STEALER! So EPIC.
Where did Annabelle get that nine-lives stealer, out of curiosity?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aa.
Anyone have the phone number you’re supposed call when “it” lasts for more than four hours . . . Asking for a friend
Right on!
Sweet sweet justice. Couldn’t happen to a nicer person.
*queues up “At Last” by Etta James and slow-dances around the room with a huge smile*
YES!
It’s a nice touch, the life-force being sucked out of Dwayla’s eyes. Going to guess that she failed her saving throw.
Vindication has been complete!
Wait, Dwayla’s nose piercing is missing in the third panel.
Good lord. I’ll fix it.
And… fixed!
Popped out from force of impact like the bracelet?

Pure satisfaction. This arc continues to be awesome.
Thank you for sharing your worlds with us, Brian!
You did real good man. Real good.
Was she always green?
Yep,

Holy Christ, that payoff was worth it..
Does anyone have a towel or a moist towelette?? Asking for a friend….
You ever stab a bitch so hard her bracelet breaks from the impact? Annabelle has.
I genuinely scream-laughed at this comment. Fucking amazing.
wait who is this lady that just got murderfied?

Amnabelles dearest friend? “They’re lesbians, Harold!”
This was perfect! Unexpected and well done!
Oh, you definitely *stuck* the landing. Bravo.
It certainly landed the way Anabelle wanted it to 🙂
Epic
Chekhov’s Nine Lives Stealer
FLAWLESS VICTORY.

I would say “three breaths from death” would definitely imply Dwayla was Incapacitated, for an auto-crit by Anabelle.
Oh, and also: “Incapacitated” doesn’t only mean “unconscious”. You could be laying there, conscious but unable to do more than *maybe* moan in pain, bleed, and wonder if that bit over there is your spleen, or something even more important.
My assumption is more a narrative moment then a mechanics thing it just up to however you want to interpret it is how it works.
Get. Fucking. Wrecked.
Great scene!
Curious if you planned this moment to be the 100th installment of this saga, or if that was just a random crazy happenstance
Of course now you have made an enemy of the marids, potentially, but damn, that has to feel satisfying nonetheless.
*wince*
ooo, that’s gotta sting a bit.
Sorry, we’re fresh out of band-aids. Used them all up fighting the Aspect!
ok so . . .would it be mercenary of me to ask if they looted her 🙂
