To be fair though, they are experienced players and nothing specifically said they are starting at lvl 1 characters. A lot of tables I have played with usually start at either lvl 5 or 10, since most of the players are well familiar with the system and don’t need the low-level run-down.
But still, no silver against were-rats? You’re going to have a bad time.
If smart they would cast spells on the weapons because silver isn’t the only thing that can effect them…..
Also fire gives regen creatures a hard time too…..
Based on Part 5 at least one of them has a torch, I think it’s Brett’s character based on the silhouettes. However I think one torch isn’t enough to beat two undead wererats. I don’t know the rules enough to be sure if they have anything else that might work… Sam’s character is some kind of priest? Are undead vulnerable to holy damage or healing in this setting? Can Were-creatures regenerate from magical damage inflicted by spells rather than magic weapon?
most dm’s don’t consider spelled items to be “magical weapons”. with magical weapons, it’s part of the alloying/damage enchantment, not just the surface enchantment – thus there are a couple of spells which specifically “enchant weapon to the +x equivalent”.
Regen is easier. If you can *collectively* do enough damage to put the ravenous down in one round, it’s (probably) dead. DR means *each attack* has to pass the threshold, or it is totally useless.
DR totally sucks for people who can put out LOTS of little damage packets. Like, say, archers.
I’ve watched my whole gaming group flip their sh*t when they realized that CR2 wererats were going to roflstomp the level 6 characters since only one person brought silver. It got reeeeeeally tight.
…Raven swarm. Guys with guns got devoured by a raven swarm. These were elites. Nobody brought a weapon with any form of spray. I still get flak for my tendency to always carry something designed specifically to harm that style of enemy.
An amorphous green blob with eyeballs with a gleeful grin shows up holding what appears to be an over-sized bowling ball with a trigger. With a mighty “THOOOOOM!”, a massive gout of searing flame issues forth from the object, instantly turning both Ravenous into a fine, powdery ash. The blob scoops up the ashes, tosses them into his gaping maw, waves, and then disappears as mysteriously as he appeared.
…Plasma Cannon aren’t Fire damage weapons though. They are more “Melty-burny supeheated gas turning you into ash” weapons.
…Then again, given that the thing hit by the plasma cannon will soon have no opinion on the matter, we are just splitting hairs. Points for the Schlock nod, though.
YES ,oh frickin YES. thank you. i hate it so much when were’s are underpowered in Games. Cause most of the time they don’t have they regen. or they are just slightly stronger average Humans (sometime with really horrible attack stats, much more often missing than hitting).
Now this guys are really interesting and start to grow on me. wonder what Stats they would have in a game like..lets say, pathfinder.
Well, in D&D (and Pathfinder) Lycanthropes have DR10/silver. Apparently in Karthun, they have regeneration instead? Pretty good regen too, to heal all that damage in one go.
Maybe I’m reaching… maybe I’m desperately trying to tie everything together… maybe I’m a rambling lunatic.
Jeanie’s no slouch. She’s trying to get the group to see something that applies to their real lives, here.
Wererats really can’t be beat in a straight-forward fight. No matter how much you stab or punch the bastards, they keep getting up, ready to lay some violence on ya.
Same with Klaus.
They’re going to have to find another solution or die ramming their heads against a brick wall that just WON’T GO AWAY.
My P&P-Group was on their way to have the exact same problem. Fortunately for them they first tracked back the steps of another group of adventurers who had silverweapons prepared for their encounter, but never made it back to claim them, so my group took the silverweapons and had a means to fight against their enemys. Good for them to not take my bait and end up in the sewers with only their normal equipment.
Brett needs to shut up and learn to enjoy the game. He is spending too much time bullying the others into playing their characters his way. That and he feels that there is a “grudge” against him. I’ve had players like this before and they suck all the fun out for everyone. Even had a guy who only wanted other players there to sling the dice while he makes all the decisions. This gets old quick.
I had a low level monk once who the GM let unarmed strike with silver pieces between his fingers in a situation like this…but he also ruled it cost me 1sp each hit.
Probably not useful in this situation, when this happened to our party, we outnumbered the were and went for the “grapple and tie it up with 20 feet of rope” option – since we didn’t have a suitable solid chest to put a decapitated head into. Doesn’t kill’m but makes it a bit harder for them to pull off a full regen.
Given that they’re apparently all supposed to be veterans of the understreets of this city, it seems a little odd that they wouldn’t have silver – especially if they had a history with the things.
Where’s the weres? Right there.
Oh shit indeed.
Well we’re right f@!& arnt we……. right in the downunder
F@#&ed….. right in the downunder
Level 1s against regen? Hoo-boy. O.o’
Sounds like Pathfinder Society Season 0 modules.

When was it established that they were undead?
I though that’s what the unnatural magic glow from their eyes and mouth implied… though now that I think about it I’m not sure where is got this idea.

That’s kind of a shitty house-rule. DR is nasty enough without gimping one way PCs can overcome it.
(And yes, by the book a Magic Weapon spell should beat DR. It requires an enhancement bonus, which the spell gives)
Rusty Brett is rusty.
Oooooooooooooh…so THAT’S what silver weapons are for. I just thought they were a waste of money. Huh. Te more u kno
Wow, springing that on low-level/1st-level characters? Wow.
Carlos with the knowledge-bomb, son. Time to hit and run.
In the immortal words of Arthur, King of the Britons—RUN AWAY!!!!
Haha! That’s great! Loved that movie.
dang it it defaulted to the wrong song
It’s okay….I know which song you mean 😀
Duck and cover, y’all.
Regeneration, Damage Reduction, Same Diff.
One recover hit points continuously except for specific conditions, the other just reduce incoming damage by a specific amount.
Regen is easier. If you can *collectively* do enough damage to put the ravenous down in one round, it’s (probably) dead. DR means *each attack* has to pass the threshold, or it is totally useless.

You don’t need to kill it in one round even. If you can do more damage each round than it can heal, you’ll get it eventually.
well…shit
Always carry silver. Choked a werewolf to death once when I jammed a fist full of silver coins into its muzzle when it tryed to bite me.
Its never that simple. What do they do now?
I’ve watched my whole gaming group flip their sh*t when they realized that CR2 wererats were going to roflstomp the level 6 characters since only one person brought silver. It got reeeeeeally tight.
My group once got their asses handed to them by an ant swarm. Not giant ants either. Normal, tiny, could-kill-a-hundred-with-one-stomp ants.
…Raven swarm. Guys with guns got devoured by a raven swarm. These were elites. Nobody brought a weapon with any form of spray. I still get flak for my tendency to always carry something designed specifically to harm that style of enemy.
“Suddenly!

Brett: Damn killstealer!”
P.S. Really loving the group’s new Karthun adventure! 🙂

Um, what exactly do you think fire is? It’s a hot gas. There’s no reason not to consider plasma weapons as doing fire damage.
+1
Shes going for a TPK to make Sam feel better
And this is why my magic user always had a silver dagger handy, just in case.

Bretts character has 18 str, 13 dex, and 16 con.
Well, in D&D (and Pathfinder) Lycanthropes have DR10/silver. Apparently in Karthun, they have regeneration instead? Pretty good regen too, to heal all that damage in one go.
Didn’t Black Mage, Fighter, and Red Mage also run into this? Sounds like someone needs to learn Hadoken pretty quickly.
Maybe I’m reaching… maybe I’m desperately trying to tie everything together… maybe I’m a rambling lunatic.

…I could be reaching…
And right up until you said Klaus, I was nodding my head along at the idea the wererats being a depression allegory.
It works on so many levels!
I honestly didn’t even thank of the depression angle. Brett was the most vocally active, so I focused on him.
But now I see it.
My P&P-Group was on their way to have the exact same problem. Uses for a sling…. hurling silver pieces.
Please let these creatures be in the sourcebook!
Good for Carlos for figuring it out by I’m still stuck on why he muttered ‘riddles in the dark’ …

I really want to know what he’s doing with that held action.
