Old Wounds: Part One
Chapter: Season Eight
Characters: Brett
And I’m back. Let’s get into Andromeda-X.
Hey, here is a big announcement: KARTHUN IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE!
You can buy the hardback+PDF combo at the Evil Hat online store (banner below) or you can buy the PDF-only from DrivethruRPG if that is your jam.
Karthun is a labor of love for me and the culmination of a childhood dream come true. Do me a solid and help the first print run sell out? I’d like the Evil Hat people to feel like licensing Karthun was a good idea. Thanks!
Huzzah! And welcome back!
HOVER-TEXT: Oh shit, Brett.
Hahaha, that face
Awwwwwwwwwww shit, we back boys!
“I am bringing you coal this year.” – Brett, probably.
He just broke Brett.
I think Brett locked up. Don’t worry buddy, you got through Dread, you’ll have fun here too.
why did I have to see this post about karthun being for sale after i just bought a $200+ tarantula?! oh well… in any case welcome back and as always comic is looking good. π
So when can we expect that dice bag for sale in the store?
I would snap that up in a few heartbeats!
Gonna be interesting to see if Brett triggers yet another “This isn’t my father’s game” moment from another gamemaster here… https://d20monkey.com/comic/the-formula/
Did you try turning your Brett off and then on again?
I can hear Brett’s heart breaking from where I am haha.
This is my exact reaction to diceless games.
Brett is going to explode. π
Yay! So excited to see you back!
I head glass shattering.
“Oh my god, you broke Brett!”
I’m pretty sure we just watched Brett’s psyche develop a split personality. We better hope this is the last bomb Carlos drops on Brett or we’re gonna be in full-on Split territory come this Friday.
He broke Santa! Carlos is on the naughty list for life!
Am I the only one that heard a record scratch for the last panel? π
Carlos broke Santa!
The last time I saw that look someone had just said “bat credit card” to The Nostalgia Critic.
Aaand we are back with a bang! Or should that be back with a crack?
Either way, I’m really looking forward to this story arc, and I’m really glad you’ve got enough work coming through to make a living doing your art, Brian!
I see being Santa, and having a kickass time with Dread, hasn’t made this any easier on Brett.
Welcome back! Missed you there for a while, hope everything is ok!
I think I am on Bretts side with this one. I am all for the Dont use to much rules and stuff, but how do you determine if something worked or failed during game without some dice?
well with Falkenstein, you’d use a standard deck of cards, you are given a few at random, then you choose to add some value to your level through these cards, which make it strategic and story-driven, since you have to choose which action deserve heroic-level.
The deck they are using is, I assume, a variation on the Deck of FATE, which still randomly generates numbers, it just takes the place of the normal FATE dice.
Brian is back, Brett is broken, Karthun is out, great!!!
I’m flipping through the Karthun PDF right now, it looks awesome.
Brett needs a CTRL+ALT+DELETE at that juncture…
Welcome back, Brian! And excellent work bringing Karthun to life! Already got my copy, now looking for a gaming group to play with π
Welcome back and that look on is face is epic!!!
Ah this reminds me of the old Knights of the dinner table Comics.
“You don’t take away a mans Dice, its just not right!” π
N…N…No dice… *eye twitch* (O.o)’
Welcome back! π
And now I really want that dice bag…
I take back my original comment, this sounds stupid and gimmicky.
Great news! You don’t have to read it! Wooooo!
Once forgot to bring my dice to a friend’s house and ended up having to substitute a deck of cards. Worked well for my game, and I didn’t have a deck tailored specifically to the game I was playing like Carlos does. It may be gimmicky, but it sure ain’t stupid; I wouldn’t use a card based system all the time, but it’s a good way to spice things up for a one-off. As long as Brett doesn’t start behaving like Brett, the game will be fine.
Yay! Starting the next round with some tension. Let’s see how Brett reacts.
Ok everyone sit in a circle. Now whoever holds the drum gets to tell a new part of the story.
Yay you are back!!!! After you turned off the comments there was something I wanted to tell you and the people who were rushing you, “yes making comics is easy, but making good comics, especially if you have other things you NEED to do, that, is hard
Brett.exe has crashed. Please reboot.
Congrats on Karthun!
Somebody got TRIGGERED
Oh noooo, first time GM with his own homebrew setting/game mechanics?
This is…not good in terms of a lesson.
Guys already nervous enough.
I mean it’s a comic so it’ll likely work out, but irl this is not a sound idea.
FATE decks are a thing. Given the limited range of dice roll results in the system, it’s not hard to mimic with cards. And, really, FATE is *designed* to home-brew settings. Carlos isn’t going out on any particular limbs in terms of the game/systems, just in terms of being the person at the head of the table.
Huh, didn’t know about Fate Decks, fair enough. Though I feel like Carlos knew his audience and probably should’ve stuck with dice for the first session at least.
Great to have you back Brian, really excited for the new arc and totally gonna grab Karthun next payday lol. Actually, I was looking at the FATE accelerated rules and those look pretty fun, should be an interesting game.
Ohgawsh, I’m so happy to finally get to see the game!
And poor Brett, just wants to roll dice and that’s two diceless games in a row, I think.
And of course, congratulations on the Karthun release!
Am I the only one who wants that sweet ass dice bag Brett has?
Yay! Karthun is being sold now!! Ooooohhh, and there is an actual physical book! And- wait, what’s this? They…they don’t ship internationally?! *cries*
Oh well… Congrats on getting it out there though π
And yes, I know I can just get the pdf π I love having the physical book though. It just feels…better.*shrug* I’m just weird I guess. I’ll have to check with the “major” retailer for this kind of stuff in Norway if it’s something they can/intend to grab.
Happy you’ve time for the comic, and congrats on release!
Interestingly, Brett’s reaction strikes me as strange… because we’ve had card-based resolution of actions, in part, since the Deck of Many Things has been around forever. Being that there are 52 cards in a deck, it works pretty well for percentiles, and for most rolls anyway, if you’re decent with arithmetic.
I mean… I understand the sentiment, and I *know* people like that, but it’s always been an odd reaction to me (drawing cards works far better than dice on, say, public transit, where I’ve played quite a few games).
Yeah, but I think for Brett DoMT are just a gimmick and not the sole resolution mechanic.
I think we just saw Bret break
Solid is done, book is on it’s way. Thank you for all you’ve done.
I’ve never commented on anything ever, but I have to say it’s dang good to see you back, Brian. Also, picked up the Karthun PDF and my glob, it is glorious! I can’t wait to get my group into the world. I’m already forming some cool ideas for the future of my Karthun . Looking forward to more being released!
1. If you can get that sweet sweet matte finish book, I recommend it.
2. I want to hear all Karthun ideas.
“Hello, Gamer Customer Service, this is Dennis speaking how may I help you” “Your Brett unit is locked up? Well I’ve very sorry about that, lets see what we can do to help. What was happening at the time? I’m sorry did you say ‘Diceless gaming’? I’m very sorry sir but attempting to introduce the Brett unit to diceless gaming voids the Gamer Warrenty. You can attempt to reboot your Brett with Mt Dew and Dorittos but it may be hard broke I’m afraid.”
<–just realizing there are no Fate Dice in Brett's sack.
@Matt Jackson
Well…OK. I’ll probably get flamed for it, but here goes.
Very rudimentary idea, super high level concept view:
Prathian manages to pierce the dimensional barrier and returns with Sehad! Not the Sehad from this world, but from a world where the Worldfire has engulfed Karthun and he was the only surviving god. Prathian rescues him just before his Karthun is consumed by the Worldfire. This Sehad is hardened and embittered by the loss of his his world and vows to stop that from happening to this Karthun. Of course, things are taken to extremes (and beyond) and much adventure follows.
This gonna trigger something along the lines of the stigma of using someone elses dice?
Where was Brett in 94/95? I mean to me Castle Falkenstein is only the best game ever written.
Please make sure it stays up for a while. What the product but money tight right now
