Larry told Sam that he was finished “for now”. Larry will be back soon and the trials will resume. I want to give Sam a little time to work at the Dragon’s Den and lead into Dallas Noble’s public debut.
Well I honestly think preference is a good thing. And that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I’ve played Vampires the masquerade, B.E.S.M, D&D next, 3.5, 4e, 1st, and 2nd, Werewolves, Shadowrun, and PAthfinder. Heck I’ve even played the marvel game. But all in all I didn’t really like 3.5 or 4e. Pathfinder is my game of choice.
Don’t take it too close to heart, John. This one is directed at the trolls out there. I play 4e and there are aspects of it I do not enjoy. Your comment is well-spoken, clear, and makes a valid point. That let’s me know you are not one of the booger eaters we often encounter on online forums. Thank you for reading, John and I hope you’ll come back on Friday. 🙂
I get why folks don’t like 4e, i don’t myself, but why complain so much when one can just keep playing 3.5 or just switch over to pathfinder (as I have done)?
That’s just your opinion. There are lots of people who disagree. And there are even people who think Pathfinder is terrible, and that D&D should have stopped at 2nd ed (or even 1st ed).
Personally, I like multiple editions for different reasons.
Spot on, in my book. But what I’ve been learning is that the people who bitch loudest about 4e tend to have had bad DM experiences, or are total freaking twinks who don’t like that all their old combos no longer work.
I respect people who don’t like 4e and respect the fact I do like it. Those that talk down to me for liking 4e, well… yeah, don’t I wish.
I’ll agree with that one, I got Pathfinder and really love it. Not a fan of 4E. I understand it, I’ve played it, but they’ve made some terribly design decisions and I won’t be playing it.
I mean, come on, what they’ve done to alignments alone is laughably stupid. I can see changing the system, but having Lawful Good and not Chaotic Good? And Chaotic Evil and not Lawful Evil? The Brood War is now Evil vs Chaotic Evil, I guess… *head hurts*
Hey guys, I have played both and hereby submit my conclusion in contrasting the editions:
Neither is better or worse. Let’s ditch that stupid argument. Each just has a slightly different emphasis, appealing to two slightly overlapping player types [insert Venn diagram here].
3.x = a role playing game relying on strategy elements
4e = a strategy game relying on role playing elements
I base my conclusions on gamers I know personally, and the heaps of debate I’ve read online over the past couple of years.
My gamer friends who moved on from 3e to 4e always preferred the battle aspect of the game, often content with an evening of pure miniatures on a map, with little need to develop a character beyond its utility in combat. They still enjoyed a DM with a flair for the dramatic, provided his exposition didn’t delay the action for very long. It’s more of a competitive exercise than a collaborative expedition.
Those that kept with 3.x or sidled over to Pathfinder were always more interested in the background of their characters, some eager to exhibit a unique personality, others entranced by the bounty of race and class options for making each PC function distinctly. A weird interplay I’ve found in these players is how the former might reference the rules only when necessary in deference to their thespian aspirations, while the latter might spend an inordinate number of hours scouring all available source books for each feature and attribute in order to conceive of a comprehensive individual.
I like 3.5 and 4e for different reasons. 4e lets you be more narrative but not as specialized and 3.5 allows more specialization. My major complaint against 3.5 is that there is a huuuuge lack of balance. In 4e there is a little lack of balance but it isn’t bad, but I hate that every class plays as a 3.5 sorceror. There is no real distinction between character classes.
What happened to the trials?

On behalf of the internet, thank you.
Now I want that shirt… lol
Oh god if ONLY I could do this to those people that come into my shop!
See, I just don’t understand what is with the hate on 4e. I thought it was a pretty big improvement over 3.5

I’d also like to thank you. Or roll a d6.
As a regular reader who enjoys the comic but not 4e, this one makes me sad.

I was going to write my own piece on what I think about 4e, but really, you summed it up perfectly.

2E is Best.
