Innsmouth Garden Society: Epilogue
With today’s epilogue this ends the Innsmouth Garden Society story arc. As I’ve mentioned before, this was a very enjoyable experience for me. The challenge of presenting a somewhat serious tale completely from an in-game perspective pushed me as a writer and artist. I welcome such challenges and hope the time spent with this exercise/indulgence was a good one from a reader’s perspective.
I can assure you there will be more Innsmouth Garden Society story arcs in the future. I love the subject matter. For now, though, we will return to the antics of the cast. I am missing Sam, Brett, and the rest. Again, thank you for reading and allowing me the freedom to experiment with different presentations and ideas.
Wednesday, we return to business as usual.
Brian
Brilliant! 🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing Caldwell again someday.
I wonder if Caldwell is Yffre?
What does the yellow sign means?
In the Cthulhu mythos, The Yellow Sign is the sign of Hastur and is used by members of his cult to identify one another. In addition, according to many of these works one of Hastur’s avatars is known as the King in Yellow.
In the original Robert Chambers stories, the Yellow Sign is a mystical symbol that (unreliable narrator) commands obedience from any who view it.
So, this story arc was the first thing I saw after I followed the link from the Hijinks Ensue guest strip. I enjoyed it so much, I read through the entire archive this weekend! Great strip, but now I want to get my RPG books out of storage. ><
Brian, I apologize in advance for the following. I know you’ve enjoyed these recent strips. I love your comic, and the longer stories like the Christmas special were amazing. But this whole Garden Society thing, the first strip or two didn’t really grab my attention, and the rest just went into the TL;DR bucket for me. I look forward to seeing your main lineup of characters get back into the action, and hope something fun happens here soon.
Bravo!
I loved the whole thing, I have but a single complaint.
Not long enough!
Can we get a recap at the table for the cast? I’m talking about sam and the girls. Wanna see how far into the night they stayed up lol
Concur! I’ve been waiting with baited breath for table glimpses of the cast playing the game. Sam interacting with the girl-crew. Table recap would be awesome.
Loved it!!!!!
I enjoyed the hell out of this storyline, and look forward to the next time you do this. Only thing really bothering me: Abby sent word to the sister’s what in Arkham?
Probably a branch, like how there’s a Shriner or Moose Lodge in many different cities.
Absolutely correct! There are a handful of branches and Abby called in aid from the Arkham branch in the wake of this story.
Very cool, glad you saved Caldwell for later.
The arc was really excellent. Thanks!
I also followed the link and burned through the archives.
Even when the story telling lagged a bit at times …. you know where those points are …. It still held me enough to want to read more.
This last story arch – loved it – As for the “Garden Society” in a Cthulhu game?
If I was a betting person i would put money on, or at least a few boxes of pokey, that you had been exposed in some small way to “Fellowship of the White Star : Legacy of the Rose”. You sure you are not writing an adventure or two for that Campaign because this story arc fits the bill perfectly.
Loved this Arc,
I’m sooo gonna have a Cthulhu night session this week.
Good Show my good man. I look forward to more.
I loved loved loved this arc. It made me drag my group together for a CoC night, and inspired me to actually DO something other then run around and try not to get killed. First time we ever succeeded in NOT being completely devoured.
YAY you.
Snow Queen this just made my day. 🙂
According to wikepedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Sign
the yellow sign is a symbol of the King in Yellow, and bearers of the sign are susceptible to mind control by the king. It says nothing about immunity to explosions or slashed throats 😉
So, am I missing some part of the mythos (I’m not that familiar with Cthulhu, having read only a few Lovecraft stories – and none featuring the King in Yellow) or is Brian deliberately delivering up a conundrum?
Loved this arc SO MUCH!
TBH, I’m torn on whether to have a table recap or not. I’d love to get the reactions from the table, but I also appreciate that the storytelling led me to forget that these were the normal cast of characters playing in a game. I was totally immersed, and I’d kind of like to leave the illusion in place.
Bravo, sir. This was an excellent divergence from your norm, and I would love to see more in the future.
Brilliant arc. Loved it, especially the “explosive finale”. ^_^
great stuff!!! you might need to create a sister site just for these sorta arcs! cant wait for more
I enjoyed this, but it had some failings, the most major one being in that it was a little rushed into getting to this point. I felt like it glossed over what to me is one of the most important parts of any RPG session’s story: The characters. There wasn’t any feeling of how the characters related to each other because we never got to see them interact much at all. In the end, the effect this created in my mind was that it is more of a setup or background for future adventures than an actual adventure or story in its own right.
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the arc, AG. Perhaps in the future I will rise to the occasion and present a more complete story for everyone involved. Live and learn.
While it was a well done arc, it felt like a short story that was unconnected to the comic as a whole. There was little of the game night event feel to it. The main players in the group just sat back, gave the new guy all the good schtick, and it just kind of fizzled at the end. The promise of the girls creepy note and induction of Sam seemed to get lost.
Cal, take a look at the comment I left AG. I think the same can apply here. I’m sorry you did not enjoy it.
Awesome. Soooo well done and layered, really impressively dense for how short. Mooooooore please!
That’s really creepy. I don’t know all that much about CoC, but I do know that not even demons are immune to dynamite. Just what the hell is he?
