Guest Comic by Sarah Frisk of Tavern Wenches
Today’s guest comic arrives courtesy of Sarah Frisk of the super fun webcomic Tavern Wenches!
Tavern Wenches has been running for a little bit and like so many others, if you go back and look at her early work, Sarah’s style (and I would say confidence) is evolving/developing right in front of our eyes. Sarah is also doing something that few creators do: She is going back (now wiser and more comfortable) and actually redrawing her early comics. I’ll be honest, I like the idea of revisiting early comics and giving them a facelift to match with your current look. It usually takes time to find your legs and consistency is awesome.
Once again I’d like to thank all of the awesome folks who offered up comics for this guest run. It really helped me out and I am in your debt.
I am back in the saddle and a new arc begins on Monday!
aaaaaaaaaaand
Here is a bonus guest comic by Betsy Brock of webcomic Fruit! Betsy is super nice and I love that in the age of all-digital webcomics her work is still old-school pencil/inks/brushes. She’s been a bit of a hiatus and I hope she starts back up again soon.
Sarah also did her research on braille Playboy:
Despite the fact that there is no nude photos/representations in the braille version of the magazine, Congress withheld $103,000 from the Library of Congress – the exact amount it costs to print 1,000 copies of the magazine. Apparently each issue of the magazine is printed onto four separate volumes and aren’t cheap. A Federal District Judge ended up ruling that the Library of Congress violated the First Amendment rights of blind people by eliminating Braille editions of Playboy magazine. (http://www.nytimes.com/1986/08/29/us/blind-win-ruling-on-braille-playboy.html)
You can even find copies of braille versions of Playboy on archive.gov – http://www.archive.org/stream/playboybraile00nlsu#page/n0/mode/2up
And you can see what an actual braille Playboy looks like in the movie “Sneakers”. 🙂
Personally I like it when webcomic artists leave there early work in it’s “raw” form, I think it’s quite cool to see how someones style has evolved over time 🙂
I agree. Howard Tayler is my go to example for that…part of my enjoyment is watching his art’s transformation. I’ll do that with a few of the webcomics I follow, just start from the beginning and read through to the current strip in big binges. Haven’t done that here yet, but may sometime soon, when I have time to tip for my extra bandwidth usage. 🙂
It is well worth it sir. But prepare to lose some sleep like I have :p
My father wrote a term paper on Cuba, citing Playboy as one of his main references. They had done a rather lengthy article on Cuba and Castro.
Wow! Just read through all of Sarah Frisk’s Tavern Wenches… I’ll definitely be following her for the rest of her comic’s days.
Wench-power and beholders? So sold…
One of my friends reads a number of webcomics, Questionable Content included. She loves QC, but she doesn’t like the way it looks.
Because she liked the original drawings better.
She despises change.
Nice Beauty and the Beast reference there!
(yes, I know I’m almost 6 years late to the party)
