Jesus, this long winding road is ending, and I am NOT ready for it. You had me worried there with sone being bitter with Larry, but not all endings are really happy. Though I’m glad this one was.
Also, here’s to all of us who are hoping Mel comes back for IGS. I know it’s not just me, I see you.
Funny thing is that through this epilogue, all I’ve wanted is for Sam to be happy. He seems content but not necessarily happy. Maybe it’s just me reading into it.
But as for the other characters, I can’t imagine happier “endings” for them. I hope we’ll get to see some of them in IGS.
To add to this, therapy isn’t a place where I am projecting happy vibes. Sitting there talking about things, no matter how good and happy the things are, not on my list of happy activities. Therapy is an INCREDIBLY useful tool. Typically exceptionally healthy. Can provide catharsis. It can provide coping strategies. It can provide insight. Never did the actual therapy appointments, however, provide happiness.
I was happy before them and after them though.
So if Sam doesn’t seem “happy” in these epilogues, but “merely” content? It fits to my experiences with therapy. But that said… I still think Sam is happy.
I’m confused. If Larry thought Clive was the threat where were his powers supposed to have come from? The Doubt says Sam’s resentment and jealousy set him against his so-called friends, presumably Brett, so why did Clive kill the Easter Bunny? B/C he’s a springtime Mantle Bearer?
To answer the first… Killing the Easter Bunny could be construed as killing the mantlebearers prevents them from coming at Clive? My guess is that each Mantlebearer has power and could be called by the King of Seasons to help another, and killing EB could be seen as dispatching potential reinforcements. Would you want to take on Santa, the Easter Bunny, AND (insert the Mantlebearer of Summer)?
RC: It was eluded to a bit on previous pages, but the idea behind it all is that The Doubt (long powered by an unaware Sam and the Narrative) was pulling at strings to mobilize enemies against Brett, etc. by taking the forms of fears or past emotional scars, and the nature of his being cloaked his existence from beings like Larry, Talbot, and the King of Seasons.
So from Larry’s perspective, Clive acquired new power *somehow* and felt confident in the party’s abilities to overcome any challenge he tossed at them. It was intended to be a very DM kind of “I planned for X and OH NO I FORGOT ABOUT/DIDN’T PLAN FOR Y”.
Clive killed the EB to reduce the number of Spring allies that could be called to help Brett. On the editing floor, I planned to show a few more mantlebearer murders by Clive.
The “She” is the Mother of Kris and Klaus, the mantlebearer of Claus during the Great Depression. Klaus was hearing her voice whenever The Doubt spoke to him.
It comes down to a rare case of *ME* knowing the entire story and feeling it was delivered to inform the reader but I have already seen that when I go back through the archive for edits, I may need to add a few words or panels to make it all sing. I can do that, so I will for sure.
Thanks for filling in the gaps. I didn’t think anything was ruined. I just hate loose threads. I enjoy your storytelling and I think you provided enough clues that we don’t have to have full exposition on every little detail but I couldn’t reconcile those few points.
I’m archive diving, and came across an old strip (https://d20monkey.com/comic/the-bane-of-his-existence/) that would make a great series. Something for you to chew on Brian. At any rate, even though I’m sad to see d20Monkey come to an end, I can’t wait to see where you go with Innsmouth Garden Society (I’m pretty sure I left these words as a comment before, but I still have to voice my support).
I have a “quality of life” request for the comic. Could you put a navigation bar at the top of the screen? I love the comic, but I don’t check every day, and sometimes there are two or three comics that I have missed. Right now I get spoilers when I scroll down to the bottom of the screen for the navigation arrows.
This is totally a first world problem… and I’m going to read your comic regardless of whether you implement it, but it would be much appreciated.
Well, I am aware of that. I just couldn’t work it into my suggestion without lots of clumsy wording that were beside the point. I know Brian is going to make a new comic after this though, and I will read that one too. I figure my suggestion is likely to be a good one for that too.
I was kind of hoping for a more in-depth scene of resolution with Mel, but seeing it this way, I can see the story didn’t really need it. Mel was a big part of the early comic, and a massive plot point, but the comic and the story eventually just outgrew that and went beyond it.
If she had never shown up again at all, I don’t think it would’ve detracted much. But I’m glad there were these small handful of scenes to bring some closure to that end. It feels like a nod of respect to that early version of the comic, and that’s nice.
Damn. All this time I was *sure* that the off screen “therapist” voice was going to be Larry.
My money’s on the cat.
I agree. We ARE going to want to know how Emma is, after all.
My guess goes for the lich-therapist introduced earlier in the comics.
I think it will be an author avatar.
I was betting the same thing, well guess we shall see
only one more?
thanks for all this.
Dawn Of The Final Page

The therapist is Brian!
Creator cameo coming up!
Just a guy talking to his cat.
All. The. Feels.

As somebody who struggles with depression, contentment can be a real victory in itself.

I am Not Prepared for the next page

Also, who was the cryptic “She” that supposedly hates “him” (Brett) as much as Clive?
https://d20monkey.com/comic/elsewhere-part-three/
those are both REALLY REALLY good questions
I think it is supposed to mean. Clive hates Brett as much as he hates Jeanie.

I hope this didn’t ruin the read for anyone.
It’d be interesting to see like a…book of apocrypha I guess that outlines the whole thing.
If that’s something on the board of “Possibly sometime” if the IGS comic doesn’t take up too much time.

I can’t imagine there will be many site changes as this is the second to the last comic for this series.

My memory’s hazy, have we ever seen Brandon before????

So who is this Brandon guy?
