Ye Olde Game Shack
The Gamestop pulling coupons fiasco is one of those incidents that seem to hit folks one of two ways:
1. You care and it is a personal offense. You’re mad as hell and you’re not going to take it anymore.
2. Meh
I tend to fall more towards the “Meh” side of the situation. I’ve had a lot of experiences with Gamestops in my area. I have to say, on a personal level, they have all been less-than-ideal. The guys working in this area border on that magical combination of elitist-gamer and collar poppin’ dude-bro. You know the type. I don’t think I have to explain any further. Regardless, their sales tactics are on the pushy side and their aura of snark is godlike.
Hey, I’ll buy a copy of Rockstar Table Tennis i if I want to! Okay, bro?
That isn’t to say ALL Gamestop employees are dude-bros. I know they’re not and that out there somewhere nice, honest, non-pushy GS employees are waiting to assist folks each and every day… I just wish a few would come to the Nashville area. Seriously.
Could I stop shopping there? Sure I could but I understand the situation and I work within it if I have too. My local Gamestop is close to the house and the guys there are the lesser of two evils in this area. Some days, you just don’t want to fight the crowds at big box stores.
Commenters: What have your experiences been at the Game O’ Stop?
That’s funny, I just traded in my XBOX 360 copy of Table Tennis for a whopping .65 cents! It’s like trying to sell books through Half-Price Books; I walk out feeling violated. But the alternative is selling items through Craigslist or eBay and I don’t have that kind of time or dedication.
Before music went almost completely digital, I ran into the same type of thing in second-hand CD stores. I don’t need someone to turn their nose up at my purchase of Ratt’s Greatest Hits! Just ring me up, buddy!! 😉
Holy shit, man! I love me some Ratt every once in a while. I have a real soft spot for bands of that era.
Ever since the Vintage Stock opened I’ve avoided Gamestop. I don’t need their judging glares as I buy used Lego video games.
The Lego video games are AWESOME.
Is that a tiefling blackguard? I love the armor 🙂
Just found d20monkey. From a fellow webcomicer, great stuff!
Hadn’t had too bad of an experience at Game Stop… yet. Probably helped that my friend’s brother worked there and I only go to buy used games (at least I already know they’ve been tampered with and it’s cheaper). I’d never sell a game there again though. I’d get more money selling it at a garage sale.
The guys down here in Huntsville (at least the one in Jones Valley) are pretty good. They do try to sell me on pre-orders, but they’re not pushy about it.
The guys in Callahan are actually nice. And there are a couple of females. I did run across a guy who dresses like a hippie, but he was actually pretty good about everything, and he didn’t push everything on me.
the people that work at my game stop are pretty nice and i havent had any problems like that and everything for a new game has been included when i buy it(though usually it is a game just realised so i get it from the counter on preorder but i dont think that really changes things there
the only problem is that i have to make sure to check used games because some times they are scratched all to hell and back
As I make the epic crawl through your archives, I thought I’d stop awhile and comment. For the last five or six years, the gamestop in my town has been pretty good. Some of the employees can be annoying (Like the former manager that would not stop asking me to “Prepurchase” everything) but by and large I’ve enjoyed it. It is really nice to walk in to a place you frequent and they know your name. Most people won’t give you lip about the games you purchase, even if it is something like Animal Crossing for the wii. (AC rocks, yo.)
Anyway… I’ve been lucky I guess.
I’m pretty lucky I guess, the brother of my DM and the most annoying Eladrin on the planet works at my Gamestop. He’s generally a nice and helpful guy.
