Ha-ha. I had to read that about five times while confused before I realized that “wipe” in an RPG situation can describe something other than a TPK. How’s that for an MMO-bias seeping into my point of view.
Love the art in the final panel. That temple looks awesome! I think the groups characters are in for a shift in their approach to roleplaying. Keep up the great work Brian!
Play some angry birds star wars, they use the star wars wipe. It just means a scene transition where one image replaces another gradually across the screen, like a curtain being drawn aside, or a squeegee.
In film it’s a transition from one scene to another, sometimes used to advance time or change location. As if you are walking from Point A to Point B, and nothing interesting is to happen on that journey, one scene you say we’re going to go to wherever, you do a wipe/transition, and you show the characters at Point B.
Yes, a “wipe” is one tool for transitioning from one scene to the next. But it is not the generic transition as indicated by other commenters. It is notable in Star Wars because it is a throw-back; most movies then and now use a fade instead of a wipe. Star Wars is intentionally made in the style of Flash Gordony type stuff, and the wipe is one such element.

Ditto
Took me a second or two as well.
I’ve always called it FTB or fade to black which is sort of a ‘shit happens but nothing that will do more than give you boot blisters and…. ROLL!’
Typo:
“FULL OF RESOURCE DELEPTING FILLER”
I think you mean “depleting”….

Cheers!
I’m slightly ashamed, I didn’t get this comic at all. I’m missing some kind of meaning of wipe.

Ah ha thank you both for explaining that. This comic makes much more sense now 🙂

I love Brett’s character physically trying to stop the wipe.
Same. Made me laugh.
Aaaaaah Brett…your heel digging attempts to halt change make us ALL laugh.
How are people missing the Star Wars wipe? It’s canon, people!
I just discovered the alt-text. 🙁
Urge to re-read archives rising.
The wipe today, travel by map tomorrow?
Well it’s taken a bit of time but I’m all caught up. Read every single strip on the site.
Sure glad I supported your Kickstarter.
Now I have to wait with baited breath for the next installment.
Thanks Brian.
