When the Darkness Looks Back
Sorry for the late comic today. I hurt my knee this morning and had to sort that out. I’ll be okay, though.
And today, a glimpse into The Dead. There is terrain to The Dead itself but Vella has dropped into a special corner the Mother of the Dead reserves for the truly valorous: The Regretful Halls. As the former goddess of valor, she has a particular contempt for such folks.
A lot of folks asked if death is an automatic sentence to suffer as one of the Mothers undead. The answer to that is: No. The remaining four gods have heralds who scour The Dead, essentially saving the souls of their faithful whenever possible. However, there many souls and few Heralds. In fact, this is one of my suggestions for high-level play in Karthun, but more on that later.
Great spooky factor! Also, I’m loving every tidbit you dish out about this setting. Makes me want to get my hands on all the fluff. Excellent long arc sir.
You HAD to bring in the children’s rhyme trope, didn’t you!? DAMN YOU, PATTERSON!
Translation: That shit is creepy. Good job.
“In fact, this is one of my suggestions for high-level play in Karthun, but more on that later.” – Are you implying there’s a campaign guide coming out about Karthun?!
I hope there is as well, this is a rich sounding world.
Agreed. I’m not usually that interested in other people’s homebrewed worlds, but I have to admit that Karthun is intriguing.
I third, fourth or whatever we’re at for wanting more info on Karthun
I find it amusing that Brett is more concerned with Raise Dead being available (even if in modified form) at 1st level than with the king’s daughter/guard captain/sole known heir becoming undead.
Yeah, wouldn’t the king be a tad upset about that?
Wow I’m actually creep out, by panel 5. I know I always fear death in real life but damn.
Will you be releasing your campaigns for Karthun, or have you and I just haven’t paid attention well enough.
If that’s her mothers spirit, then Brian, you’re a twisted, mean bastard. I’m loving this arc.
Agreed. The best kind of twisted. Now I shall commence never sleeping again.
Brian,
Long time reader, first time writer. I’ve loved reading your webcomic man! Thanks for making them this good. Just wanted to say, I’d pick up a Pathfinder Karthun campaign setting in a flash. Thanks,
Jeff…
I would too, Brian. This is actually making me want to GM again…
I think I understand now why you were tweeting about different horror movies the past few days. Inspiration, right? Well done. Very creepy. I hope there’s more to see on Vella’s side of The Dead.
Question: if Brett’s character has two functioning eyes, and isn’t a pirate, why is he wearing an eye patch?
To look badass, of course.
It’s explained earlier in the arc.
Man, Sam may not have quite gotten over his evil DM streak. This is DARK.
I predict there will be a bad trip down memory lane.
*Shiver* EUUUGH! god, its just like “Twinkle twinkle, little star” in dead space!
Terrifying in a perfect way. What a panel!
