Oooo, starting the first session a player shorter than planned is going to require a bit of reworking to the quest.
Ill have to remember the idea to get their character details before the game starts though, should making planning things way easier the first time.
I usually do character generation as a session unto itself and then have the actual first session a week or two later.
Wait, your players don’t need several weeks to build their characters and map them out from level 1 to 20?
Tell me what game we’re playing, give me an hour to get acquainted with the rules and an hour to build the character.
Not all people are as obsessive as you or I are.
Personally I will plan out a character in advance, then during the in-session character creation time, roll up stats, write up character sheet making any adjustments needed to accommodate the rolled stats, then spend the rest of the session helping others with their characters.
Aw, no! I was excited to see a new player join. Surely they will work it out?

Dang it even fictional characters are having trouble getting games going! How does the cast of weregeek make it seem so simple? Us real people and other comic characters cant do it!
