    HOVER-TEXT: ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!

The three words that, combined with a seemingly empty room, are scarier than any others from the GM’s mouth.

Or with Mercer’s phrase “What do you want to do?” Those six words in an “empty room” are dangerous too.

The other three words are,”Are you sure?”……

Seems like the roll was a failure

Nope. She failed the Spot check (or never had one) against this foe. As result it triggered a surprise round (half a round).

But yes, if the others do not beat the initiative of this attacker they will *still* be Flat Footed against him/her/it. A D&D/Pathfinder Rogue wants the surprise attack and a high initiative. Or other ways to make the enemy “loose thier Dexterity Bonus”.

They should have gotten a chance to make a spot check, after they just said they were being alert and looking out for problems.

to be fair, it looks like it may have been invisible? So even a careful routine check of the ceiling may not have revealed it.

And to be honest, I am trying to be more selective with the dice rolls we see out of game. This is a long arc anyway and adding every check would take 10,000 years.

It seems people always complain that “they didn’t roll X”, even in some cases when they did. (I even saw one person claiming that Sam didn’t get initiative rolls from them when they TPK’d, which considering he was all “ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!” was totally bizarre). Having them call all their rolls would obviously be horribly tedious, but I wonder if some sort of compromise might shut people up a bit; something like “Spot: FAILED” in a footnote maybe. Or would that be too distracting?

That really wouldn’t surprise me, after all Sam already pulled the “the loot is the final boss” card during the dungeon run.
