Vault of Deknar: Part Sixty-Seven
Chapter: Season Seven
UPDATE: I have gone back in and redrawn the bouncing d20. I held my own d20 up for reference and matched the numbers. It is not a spin down die. It is a normal d20. If it still looks weird to you, just chalk it up to me sucking in this one instance and move on.
I hear you cussing me.
Hover-Text: Clatter. Clatter.
This cliff! I can’t hang onto it all weekend Brian! Curse youuuuuu!
First name: Cliff! Last name: Hanger! Put ’em together, and what do you get?
A really unfortunately-named redshirt.
Nice.
Don’t worry. I thought ahead and placed mattresses at the bottom for people that like to hang out.
And in the next comic the die continues to roll, falling off the table… then in the comic after that, it bounces and rolls under the couch and that is the start of the next arc – The Quest for the Dancing Fireball!!!
Don’t give him ideas!
Oh, sort of like the end of Jumanji?
If you only see the result of the Fireball after you moved the couch away, is it a Delayed Fireball?
…now I kinda wanna see that instead. The Adventures of Fireball!
STOP
ROLLING
I came back days later and it’s still rolling! NOOOOOOO!!
Now, that just ain’t fair. How many cliffhangers can there be???
All of Them!
Next comic starts on a flashback to when Sam first got Fireball, and ends twenty comic pages later during his first roll of it, which then switches back to present time for the last panel, where it teeters on an edge, still not quite settled.
Don’t give him ideas. Side note. I would totally read that story.
You pick us up off the cliff edge, only to push us back off and leave us dangling.
Ha! Good joke, Brian! You’re about to load a bonus strip in a few minutes, right?
RIGHT?
*hears crickets chirping in the background*
Damn…it.
Happy Charlie is a happy Charlie.
Happy Sam is a happy Sam.
🙂
WHY IS HE ROLLING A SPINDOWN
better question. why does it have 2 7’s on it
One of them may just be a one that has an overly long… overhang? I don’t know what it’s called.
It looks like a 1 to me.
It’s the angle at which both the 7 and the 1 are that makes it seem as if there are two 7’s on it. The top is 1 and the bottom is 7.
The number below the 8 is a 1, the one to the left of 8 is the 7, you see it in panel 4.
Thank for the touching moment between friends.
Why. Why make us wait you monster. We must know.
Jeanie: And… it’s a natural 20!!!
Charlie: Really?!?
Jeanie: No, not really. It’s a 3. Calvis is toast.
But seriously, Folks, what I want to know… Why that d20 has two 7’s? Hmm…
It’s called a mistake.
One is a seven, the other is a lucky seven.
Doh! Too quick with the mistake admissions Brian – my old-school d20 goes 1 through 0 TWICE, only single digits on any face. Could have gone with that had if you hadn’t already had the teens drawn on there.
Don’t care how big the cliff is, today’s comic would have been worth it for just the first 3 panels.
Why is he rolling spin down a counter?
yes, why yes you can…
Brian, your art is really smoking these days. The story is excellent, the art fantastic. Karthun!
Oh, you all know it’s gonna be a high roll. 17, 18, 19, or a nat 20. Otherwise, the author knows we would hunt him down.
As a DM it doesn’t matter how it ends… even if the party TPKs… again… they have one heck of a story to tell.
I can tell one’s a seven and one’s a one. Old-school dice had a pretty “funky” one on them. Often fooled us when we rolled.
Ok, yes, spindown and all but…
“FIREBALL”.
What if it wants to agree with the fire entity in-game? D:
I.. oh… well crap good thing I set pitons in all the cliffs last time i was hanging here…
Seriously though Brian well done on this whole arc o.O (as well as making us cringe in anticipation)
I love the named dice. I have a few named dice myself, but they’re named for the characters I associate with them. As a DM, I tend to leave a specific D20 on top of every important character sheet so that if I roll multiple dice at once, I can keep track of which roll is which character. It speeds me up and feels more natural, and it means that my dice acquire weird names; Uncanny, Amir, Fridre, and Fracture are the big ones, but I have a couple of others, too.
IronTooth.
I’ll laugh if he gets an 11. It’s like the most disappointing roll for me simply because it’s not instantly horrible but it’s also not a gosh darned 12.
There aren’t two 7’s on the die. That’s a 1, it’s between 2 and 5. Though, in panel 4, the one has a base, and in panels 6 and 7, that base is missing. NBD. 🙂
A life counter d20? Unworthy! I am disapointed.
Ok, so, there’s a misshaped 1 and a 7, also, judging from the final position and that the only numbers we haven’t been shown are 4 and 18… Place your bets people!
Actual Goosebumps
Damn you Brain , damn you…….I just keeping looking at that last panel waiting
Truly one of your best arcs ever, and this cliffhanger truly made me smile
Awesome work and the cliffhanger is killing me!
Is that an f’in zocchihedron? Mother hasn’t stopped rolling all weekend…
Brian didn’t make a mistake on the sevens. In the first panel, the number underneath the 8 is clearly marked as a one.
C’mon man. Update already! The suspense is killing me!
I was traveling for a funeral. Sorry for the delay.
Huh. It may be a weird detail to notice, but isn’t that a counter d20? By that I mean a d20 that serves as a counter for Magic: The Gathering? I ask because the numbers seem to be following a “path” instead of having a somewhat random order in which every opposites add up to the number 21. Am I making sense here? English isn’t my main language.
Well, I just got my answers in the comments above. It’s called a spindown. The only question remaining is if that has any relevance to the storyline or if Sam’s character would use spindowns for RPG. I’ve heard rumors about them giving more biased results if not properly weighted, but I usually only roll “normal” d20s, so I don’t know.
Wait. Are you holding back on the regularly scheduled program like Fox is doing because of the World Series?
A-go-ny!
I think it might just be because Halloween.
Nah. Too easy.
I was traveling for a funeral. Sorry for the delay.
I bet it he had it roll a one. Bret then opened a portal to the real world and proceeded to “break it off”. We will get an update after Brian escapes from his “Misery” treatment.
I love how much “reverence” gamers like this would put on things like this. Because I know it would happen. I’d totally do something like that! Love it.
someone should get him a braille d20 (there are 2 different companies that make em)
