HOVER-TEXT: VMMMMMMMM is the sound of Tron taking a shit, I imagine.
SOOOOOO…..shield agains magic missiles?
*against
Well, that can’t be good.
I don’t think Carlos is happy with the result of his to-hit roll. Hopefully this [incredibly cool looking] clown is a one-trick pony and they find a way to neutralize it, but I’d prefer it happens before Carlos gets hosed down for drawing aggro. The poor guy needs a win for once, because after all the effort he’s put into his RP’ing he deserves a break.
Also, I want to play in Carlos’ RP group.
‘Nuff said.
I think when someone’s already sent a wraith against you (well, we think this is the wraiths master) & is actively stalking you the aggro is already pretty drawn. If anything he’s giving everyone else a chance to go after the enemy they could conceivably hit with their regular weapons (as the wraith just kind of ignored the earlier attack against it)
But he’s spotted the actual guy. If you’re a sneak facing a group, the one who notices you is automatically a high-priority target, and in this case he’s a mage too. Mask dude should be hitting Carlos with everything he’s got.
I’m not so sure Carlos is responding to a bad roll so much as going, “oh crap, that was my strongest attack, and he blocked it *without even trying*. And now he’s paying attention to me. I’m gonna die.”
By his reaction, the roll was actually pretty good. Just this guy’s roll was better, if not a nat 20. Hate it when that happens. XD
I don’t think you roll for defense. Saves and checks, yes, but not to simply avoid taking damage like this.
Although (per comment on the previous comic) the daggers are just a re-skinned magic missile, so Carlos’s reaction is probably more “this guy just did something to avoid taking damage from the guaranteed-damage spell. This is very, very bad.”
Shield. 1st level spell.
Magic Missile doesn’t have an attack roll. That has always been it’s schtick, even back to first edition. Not a lot of damage, but it never misses.
the change was good it went from “hi may i speak to you about our lord voltron” to badass blocking
There will come a time of great peril, and the Five shall be united as One. And then shall the Blazing Sword be formed…
Protection from missiles. The bane of sorcerers everywhere.
Magic Missile blocked by a shield spell. Carlos and Sam need to take out the Coin Wraith, while the others handle the caster. On the plus side, shield in 5E is a huge hindrance to fighters, so using one is almost worth the lost 3d4+3.
It looks to me like there’s a ‘shield’ spell effect coming from the…rapier? Although, in Karthun, it’s probably “I summon Mordak’s* Eldritch Kettle Lid” or something.
*(with a cool backstory about how Mordak died saving the realms from a demon using only the lid from a giant kettle and his adamantine ladle. The gods rewarded his valor by making him the patron of protection. And soup.)
Golly, i love this whole comic. Also: good call redrawing panel 2. MUCH more active and dramatic. Your first attempt might have been great as well, if you had been able to convey effortlessness and a little boredom as the big bad blocked the ebon daggers. Oh, well. Greatness lies in second (etc.) drafts.
I’ll second the compliment on the re-drawn panel. First one looks good, but not nearly as dynamic.
ditto!
Aaaaaah, snap.
Apparently he has a shield spell in his sword, sucks when the auto-hits don’t.
Your artwork is so good I want to seduce it and I wouldn’t even feel bad when its wife walked in on us together.
Shield is confirmed the most broken spell in the game? xd
i remember that even back in 1st ed shield caused a lot of problems, it was like a 4/2/0 ac for casters (four vs ranged, two vs. melee, 0 vs certain spell attacks, but yeah. the Magic Missle Negation was annoying (especially at low levels). to make matters worse, when you had permanancy available, i see a lot of my D&D group do it as their first permanant spell (even with the con. cost in AD&D) to make matters worse, i think the AC got lower (+1 every 4 levels or so) so you could have an unarmored mage with a -15 ac in no time just using the dex bonus, a +6 ring of protection and a +6 cloak of protection)
In the portrait art of this guy I just imagine a speech bubble that says, “Hi.” Mostly because I didn’t immediately think of his hand as a salute, but just waving.
Brian, does the symbol at the center of the shield mean anything in particular or is it just sexy flavor on your sexy arts?
Good call on the Dagger’s part. If you have a powerful ally that you are controlling, you want to stay defensive. Stay outta harm’s way, let it tank/draw aggro.
Used the same tactic myself in a 4th ed game. Had a Gnome Artificer whose summoned construct was a metal chicken named ‘Badass Mother Clucker’.
Even though Carlos looks like he is not pleased he was able to get rid of the other guy’s invisibility spell. So then everyone gets to see who else is in the room.
On the bright side, at least everyone knows where he is now.
