My group used to have this discussion a lot until my Neutral Good NPC companion had an alignment slip. The PCs are making her more bitter and angry as the campaign goes on.
Sounds similar to my group we have a lawful good female cleric and a chaotic Neutral male gunslinger and the gunslinger doesn’t respect the opinions of women.
That’s not so much of a “Depending” it’s more of a mechanic. Most D&D based systems will have it so that a social encounter is of a challenge rating, assuming its of average difficulty, equal to the average CL of the party. Thus, mechanically, had they talked the guards into submission they’d likely be worth more XP than the combat it took to take them out.
True story:
Group is playing as stereotypical good-guy criminal types. They need to get past some guards but they don’t want to kill them & last session there was a huge argument about concussions so the wizard offered to cast a sleep spell on them. Everyone agrees & the wizard does his stuff. Both guards fell asleep & face plant into the stone floor. One guard broke several teeth & the other died from the impact.
That’s kind of a dickish move. It’s generally accepted that sleep effects are typically harmless without extenuating circumstances (e.g. being up a ladder).
Aaaaannnnd I choke on my sandwich. Thanks, Brian! 😛
such a good job taking care of the guards. you almost forget about the blood stain they’ll leave on the pillows.
Although I see Brian didn’t…
LOL! That last panel is some of your best work Brian.

Brett did not read the rules properly “xp is earned for defeating monsters”. Guards are defeated, says nothing about killing. XP is already earned!
Me: you guys heard santa claus Tuck ins and cocoa for the guards
Depending on the DM or campaign, neutralizing the guard without killing them COULD be worth MORE XP.

Yeah, that third panel…with the beard…that’s just golden.

I hope they each got one of these. http://t-me1.deviantart.com/art/Owlbear-319913684
So, um, is the cocoa for the guards when they wake up, or for the monsters to use to wash down a tasty meal of “helpless guard?”
Last panel is adorable.
I love this, so much
There is a part of me that isn’t sure if I am delighted or horrified that in the Monkeyverse, Santa Claus is a merciless killer.
