I feel that what you’re doing with the villain’s use of gendered insults is powerful, but would be really really wrong if it were represented as a male DM using them. I can’t pretend to have a lady perspective, so as a cis male I have to say I would be extremely uncomfortable with those words in any game I was involved in.
I feel I can trust your intentions with this, but I worry it will attract the wrong kind of attention to this comic arc. I’m on edge here.
I’m curious how Sam will react in-character when the confrontation happens.
I hear you. Everyone has their own level of tolerance for such words (and believe me I understand the weight they carry). For me, I can accept the words in works of fiction or in a gaming situation if the intent is to establish a tone or personality. I take issue with characters that throw racial slurs, etc. constantly just for the sake of shock value. Do it once or twice to establish my immediate dislike for the character? Okay, I am cool with that. More than that and it’s just tacky. This applies for me regardless of the GM or authors gender. I see the sticking points there but I am lenient with such things, knowing that it is a character speaking and not the author.
I realize my level of tolerance is a personal thing and some folks may not like the use of the dialogue today, but all I can offer at this moment in a non-spoiler way is that there is indeed reasoning behind the words that will be revealed as the story progresses.
I appreciate the trust you give me and I shall not let you down.
As for attracting the wrong kind of people or attention, that is why I moderate now. If anyone goes of the rails, I step in. Thankfully I very rarely have to do that. A nice community is taking root here and I want to cultivate it.
As a fellow member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, any of the lady gamers I know would show up to subsequent games wearing bold scarlet As on their chests.
I get it! A canary in a coal mine! We see what happens when it sings, let’s hope we don’t see what happens when it dies… 8|
The book? As in…THE book? The book that is central to the CoC mythos? The book of infinite infamy, that can drive all but the strong of will or the strange of mind insane upon the SIMPLE ACT OF READING IT??
Actually… I think the bird might *already be dead*… (spooky finger wiggle)
And no, Al-hazred’s texts would be… unsuitable… for witch-hunting. More than likely, this is a book of mad prophecy, which these folks are using for guidance… for good or ill.
True, I noticed that they APPEAR to be the good guys, if they’re talking about hunting witches. On the other hand…
1. The people of Salem believed they were the good guys, too.
2. The big twist of the last arc pitted one evil against another in the end, and in fact, this no doubt happens quite often in CoC unless all the myriad cults have some kind of territorial thing going on.
Also, considering the title of the arc, I’m guessing one of the characters will be married, possibly to another character. If the two in question are Beatrice and Sam’s new character, what might happen between Sam and Amy out of character?
Ok I am very excited now…that was an awesome intro
Intruiging… I do like the use of a sledgehammer as a skeleton key.
Also, it seems Mr Barrow has a touch of Tourettes.
Indeed. The bird shows the way, a sledgehammer opens the door. They are not subtle.
Completely psyched for this arc!
Readying myself to lose some sanity along the way, as we all should.
P.S. Brian, you rock! We are not worthy!
Is is Barrow, or Barrows?
It is indeed Barrow.

I love the Mignola influence in the layout!
I make no bones about it: He is a huge influence for me and I hope folks take this as a love letter to his layouts.
Hellboy is awesome. ‘Nuff said!
I’m seconding Bobcat’s appreciation for the inversion of the Locked Door trope.
That is of course assuming that “Heavy Sledge” isn’t secret code for Brett.
Just be thankful it’s not ‘The Hammer’…
Where IS Mjolnir when you need it? ;P
it’s not Captain Hammer’s “hammer”….is it?
Stop. Hammertime.

Are you referring to the N-*transmission lost*

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
*boom*
Interesting. You wouldn’t happen to have an owl with Tourette’s in this arc would you? Otherwise, it’s an incredibly funny coincidence.

Hah! No. No Tourette’s owls.
I’ve been looking forward to this! Awesome intro 😀
I have a guess who their target is…

I’m glad you finally took my advice to “put a bird on it.”
