Damn. Charlie went there.

Behind the Monkey: I experimented with ghosting evil Sam behind Sam in that 3rd panel but opted to leave it out and allow Charlie’s words and the lighting to make the point.
Now I want to see an evil sam shadow silhouette a la episode 1.
Arc isn’t over… patience…
*fade in John Williams, swell at second measure*
I think it was a good decision. Of course it’s not easy to judge without seeing the one with the shadow, but maybe that would have turned out too comedic.
I would have enjoyed a mouse over shadow of Evil Sam over panel 3, I was fully expecting it and had sound fx ready.
If you’d have done the shadow thing I imagine people would be brought to the conclusion that you are going to do a “battle your demons” arc…
awesome as that would be… Evil Sam feels like a subdued part of Sam’s overarching psyche, something that Sam’s had in him but isn’t going to break out without a decent amount of pressure.
I guess my target comment is that evil sam doesn’t feel solid enough for sam to wrestle with.. but more recognize, acknowledge, and either work around or through.
After reviewing that arc, I miss Brett even more right now.
Yeah… face it bro. You cannot run for your significant other, in a group. Now if you want to RP some stuff by yourselves, y’all have fun, but… no. Nobody wants to see the return of evil Sam. Plus, you can talk to her about game stuff, instead of talking to yourself and getting insulted by your cat. https://d20monkey.com/2013/05/10/cinderhaunt-epilogue/
Actually I have to respectfully disagree. My mate always did a hell of a job keeping RL separate from game, it’s one of the things I love most about his ability to run a great game. He never once played favorites, in fact we were just talking about some our favorite in game moments from years past and a time when one of my characters screwed up royal and a lot of innocents died because of her actions and then by the end of the campaign she actually died.
It was one of the most devastating and intense games I every played in and it was awesome! No one has ever complained about him playing favorites with anyone. He’s always been a let the dice fall how they may G.M.
He’s never been a killer G.M. out to screw the players over, but he has always believed in letting a character stand or fall by their own actions or stupidity, regardless of who was playing the character. His games are what taught me to really think through my characters actions and made me a hell of a lot better gamer to this day.
I should also add that he never took out personal matters on his players. We actually broke up for a time early in our relationship and he kept it completely off the gaming table. Even when I started dating one of the other players for a couple of weeks, it never hit the table; on either side. It’s kind of the reason we were able to work things out and eventually get back together. We kept personal issues strictly where they belonged, behind closed doors.
I think the main thing is that some people can GM for an SO, and some can not. Sam is in the latter camp, and he knows it.
I have DMed for others on… it was either the first or the second date, I’m not sure. He was told up front that it was a game and setting his character was unlikely to survive, and in fact the character died. It worked out well, and everyone had fun.
I would not do that for everyone, though.
BallsDeep69, is that you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh8AsXWcBbc
That video was so freaking funny; “I’m your God and I’m all out of Mercy!”
My name is Klein!
Nah, seriously. That series is magnificent.
I’m not getting it. What reason does Charlie have to suspect that Evil Sam will make an appearance just because Amy’s at the table?
Evil Sam only showed up in the first place because he got his heart broken and kicked in by his former crush’s boyfriend. Granted, if Amy dumps him, he’ll likely go all Evil mode on the rest of the party, but that still seems like an improbably occurrence and not something Charlie would need to be worried about.
He isn’t worried about Evil Sam showing, he is using it as an example to show Sam has a hard time keeping his relationship drama from affecting his DMing. Though, I think the fact he he was able to keep level when Dove back-stabbed her counts in his favor, and I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t brought up in the next few pages in his defense.
Too be fair he kinda already reacted some what emotionally in the last comic.
That was very different, considering Douchey Dove was being a giant disrespectful douche.
I was referring to his reaction to Charlie calling his GF a blond tarrasque. the dove reaction was justified.
Because Evil Sam appeared when matters of the heart crossed the streams with the game table. Same thing could easily happen again for a different reason.
I see a theme going on Evil Sam is like the Dark Phoenix very emotional creature.
Holy jupiter shit I totally forgot the evil sam story.
It was a good one though.
Interesting to see Charlie directly title-drop the name of an ealier arc in the comic! I don’t think we’ve seen that incident referred to as “Evil Sam” in-universe previously?
Logical explanation: That’s what everyone has been calling it this whole time, just mostly off-screen.
Explanation I like better: Without his eyesight, Charlie’s other senses are keener, and by way of acute meta-knowledge he is actually secretly aware he’s in a comic. ;D
Yeah but he doesn’t like being too meta about it. Let’s not bring attention to ourselves lest we disrupt things that are best left undisturbed.
*turns off the fourth wall*
Yeah, I imagine the group referring to the incident as “The Evil Sam Affair”.
Well, they’re likely to call it something and it’s either Evil Sam or Dark Lord of the Sith, Lord Samious, I imagine.
Voldesam? The Saminator Incident? The Night Brett Gamed Sam To Death?
Evil Sam did bring us the wonder that was a purple worm with beholders strapped to it… the thought of which delights me to this day. Maybe Sam needs to vent his rage occasionally. But i guess from a group standpoint Charlie has a point.
that was kind of EXTREME though. sam had gotten his ass beat and her “Boyfriend” was a grade a twatwaffle. now it’d be completely different. it’s actually pretty unfair to even compare that shit to Evil Sam.
I don’t think it was getting beaten up that sent Sam over the edge – it was that Mel *still* picked said twatwaffle over Sam afterwards. And Sam only had a crush on Mel. Yeah, Sam might not go for a TPK, but he still might have issues keeping normal relationship stuff from influencing his DMing, and that’s not good for the group.
Yaaaay flashback to my desktop wallpaper.
And now I’m totally going as Evil Sam for our Halloween D&D game.
I see this arc a spar between Two DM’s and hope this brings Charlie to the light of DM a Game to keep things cool and collective.
Two words: Evil Sam!

Catching up now. A bit bummed to see Tamina didn’t make the list of candidates. Carlos and Dallas seem to be fun to play with. Aside from the boinking, I don’t get why Sam’s into Amy. I know it can be fun for the DM to have a significant other at the table, but it’s not always fun for the rest of the party. Glad Charlie’s bringing it up.
Ooh! If Mel and Charlie leave, then There’s room for two!
Yessssssss… come to the Evil Sam side… Bring the hate… Strike fear into the hearts of the party!
