HOVER-TEXT: The King is like that person who doesn’t open up until they have a drink. In his case, it’s painfully banishing a piece of shit elf. Hell, he needs a cigarette now.
Hey, my question got answered! Whee!
Also, I love that he is actually a little sorry that she didn’t get to do any dick kicking. On the upside, with the party pooper gone, it is party time!
Clive incited the fight, that caused the probation. He pushed the right buttons, to cause the King and the Brett to push each others buttons. But, boobs would be his undoing. Boobs were his kryptonite.
I also have to say that I really liked that he appreciated, understood and respected Jeannie’s desire for retribution. And took the time to apologize for denying her it. It validated her anger as righteous in front of his court, and prevented anyone else from possibly seeing her as just an uncouth violent mortal.
Compared to what some of the older fey are like, he’s pretty Damn stable and sane. At least you know what you’re dealing with, based on the time of year.
Based on what I’ve seen in real life, the King doesn’t really have seasonal affective disorder. My father’s got that, and basically it means the way winter light is you get depressed a lot more in the colder months.
You could draw parallels from that to how the King is, but it’s different. He’s friendly and happy in Spring, cold and stoic in Winter, and I’d imagine he has similarly season-themed moods for Fall and Summer as well.
TLDR: Being cold and stoic isn’t the same as being depressed.
I was sort of thinking that it was the other way around, really. That Douchie McElferton had more of an impact on Klaus’ upbringing than the other way around.
… Holy hell, that… makes a lot of sense. I can honestly see Klaus staring in a mirror, cutting his hair to shave away the big “Santa” hair, after his excommunication, and hearing Clive’s words as a kid, the little comments worming their way into his heart. “Winter is cold. Winter is unforgiving. Winter does not give, it takes, takes from the unworthy mortals.” When he’s done shaving, the resemblance is a Clive is more than a coincidence
After the strip where he burst out laughing at Jeannie’s comment about dick kicking and almost went into “Spring Mode”…. his hair didn’t go back to a full black. It has stayed a very dark brown now.
First, if I remember correctly, Klaus – the brother of the “old” Santa Claus and Brett’s uncle – has the rightful claim to the mantle, since Kris’ only child is an illegitimate one. However, in the 2011 Christmas arc, Dad-Santa decided to bestow the mantle onto Brett – partially out of desperation because Brett was getting his ass beat, but also probably partially because he believed Brett is worthy of being the next Santa. So, that’s where the whole “conflicting claims” thing comes from.
It also means that the whole year Brett just spent at the North Pole basically meant fuck-all. (I know what people are going to say, but if the King of Seasons decided Brett is a worthy mantlebearer, you’d think he would have some way of declaring Klaus’ claim to the mantle null and void.)
Can’t help but feel the Kings nose in profile is too small. I was expecting more of a face like the side of a mountain. His nose there looks rather delicate.
Taking on the aspect and responsibilities of a major mythological figure? Doubling in size and strength essentially at will? Primary form of transportation is a flying mount? The magical equivalent of Jarvis in the Iron Man movies providing tactical information when necessary during numerous confrontations with demigod-level opponents? Various other magical powers I’m sure I’ve forgotten? How do you go from doing that kind of thing in real life to going back to playing pretend?
I can see commuting for Jeannie, and to see the guys, but it’s not going to be the same. He’s in an entirely different weight class than his friends now–hell, he’s in a different weight class than any living human.
I kind of agree, but at the same thing, there’s two things you have to think about:
If you look back through some of the comics for this arc, you can see that he still talks and acts like the same Brett that we know and love.
Additionally, while staying at the North Pole definitely shaped him as a person (which he talks about/references in one of the comics just before he leaves), this isn’t the first time he’s gone through this. He fought Klaus three times in as many years, including one fight where the mantle actually spoke to him. And every time, he just went back home and started gaming again like it was no big deal. (Like I said, though, staying at the Pole for a whole year probably did change him.)
So, while I don’t think it would be the end of the world for him to stop gaming, I actually can see him continuing on with it.
He was still living at home, though. He still had a regular person job. And the KoS said that he’d be able to go home whenever he wanted, which implies that his base of operations is going to stay the North Pole.
He’s more Santa than he is human at this point, I think. And that’s the way it should be.
Oh, man, it was all worth it to see the King of Seasons referring to Higgins that way. I laughed myself into a coughing fit.
The King has earned my respect as well. He too has changed from the inflexible iron golem that he appeared as previously, to someone with a lot more compassion and warmth. “Tough but fair” definitely fits him now, whereas before he really came off as unpleasantly set in his ways and unwilling to accept any change or variety. Maybe this is the season changing, but I like to think he’s changing with the times and becoming a better person himself.
Awesome to see Brett get his vindication and title.
For me, at least, I didn’t see him as inflexible. He is the King of Seasons, and he is entitled to some degree of respect. And Brett was being….well, Brett. Disrespectful and belligerent. the KoS even said that he might change his mind in the spring, but probably was harsher on Brett because of his disrespect. A lesson needed to be learned.
I have to say that some of my favorite strips have come from the Innsmouth Garden Society arcs, so I’m hoping that at some point in the future, you have more planned for the ladies’ group. At this point though, I look forward to anything that gets back around the gaming table.

Omg please have him smoke a cigar or something now XD
He already smoked Clive…
Hey, my question got answered! Whee!
Also, I love that he is actually a little sorry that she didn’t get to do any dick kicking. On the upside, with the party pooper gone, it is party time!
I like the talky comics everyonce in a while haha sometimes it’s nice to see a little story progression 🙂
I think there’s a typo in the second to last panel. “His is, what I believe mortals refer to as…” should probable be “He is…”
I like it. As in “His douche is Total”.
I’m liking the King Of Seasons. Tough but fair. Hell, I’d buy him a drink.
I am so happy to read this.
I shot for tough but fair. He has (what I think is) an interesting back story that we’ll get to someday.
Clive incited the fight, that caused the probation. He pushed the right buttons, to cause the King and the Brett to push each others buttons. But, boobs would be his undoing. Boobs were his kryptonite.

To be fair, she kind of *is* uncouth and violent, though.
The King of Seasons is old-school. He doesn’t have a problem with that unless it’s directed at him. Unlike that self-righteous little twerp Higgins.
I shall hold you to that Mortal.
I’ll buy you a Keg.
You’re on. How about some hot cider, with apple brandy and spiced rum?
i still don’t like the idea of a character with his kind of power essentially having Seasonal affect disorder

Resemblance to Clive, that is. Hooray for me not being able to bloody use grammar today.
No, no, that’s good. I like that.
*listens to theory while eating popcorn, stops*
It fits…. so well…!
It would seem to make sense; as a full-blooded elf, Higgins is probably a lot older than the mantle-bearers, who seem to be ascended mortals.
Something I’ve noticed with the King of Seasons…
After the strip where he burst out laughing at Jeannie’s comment about dick kicking and almost went into “Spring Mode”…. his hair didn’t go back to a full black. It has stayed a very dark brown now.
Yay for good moods!!
So, Rory as the next stewerd of winter- Canon or Fanon?
“Divided by birthright” what does that mean?
Two things, really.
First, if I remember correctly, Klaus – the brother of the “old” Santa Claus and Brett’s uncle – has the rightful claim to the mantle, since Kris’ only child is an illegitimate one. Also, I feel like Krampus is standing off to the side going, “Seriously? Can we just, not bring that up again? Please?”
Can’t help but feel the Kings nose in profile is too small. I was expecting more of a face like the side of a mountain. His nose there looks rather delicate.
Noooooooooooooooo! I have just come to the end of a two day binge from page 1. BRING ME MORE COMICS! NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Tomorrow or the day after will be fine. Sorry don’t want to sound all entitled to your excellent and FREE product!
It looks like Brett’s back in business busting Sam’s balls for being a grudgey DM again.
“A Total Douche”-Truer words were never spoken. Love it love it love it!!
#dickkickgif for the next no-context-theater please!
I can’t see Brett gaming after this.

No that this arc hasn’t been entertaining, but hopefully this means we’ll get back to some gaming soon!
Absolutely.
Fantastic!
I have to say that some of my favorite strips have come from the Innsmouth Garden Society arcs, so I’m hoping that at some point in the future, you have more planned for the ladies’ group. At this point though, I look forward to anything that gets back around the gaming table.
Yes please! I’m looking forward to the next gaming session!
Brett playing a generous giving super-powerful Magic user? Seems pretty much like role-playing to me….
Brett could play fourth. Even he isn’t as op as the characters you make in that
I’d like to see a spin-off with Brett, and then crossovers
