The Couple
Couple who game together always make me happy. Nothing beats seeing two people who care about one another work together to overcome gaming adversity or trash-talk each other into the ground. It’s awesome.
I love  Munchkin for a lot of reasons but chief among them is how easily it introduces non-gamers to the hobby and in many cases serves as a gateway to other games or RPGs. Every seems to have their own personal taste when it comes to expansions and combinations. I am a fan of the base game with one expansion. I have to say though, Conan Munchkin is awesome. I’ve had the chance to play it once and between the game itself and John Kovalic’s outstanding artwork it is well worth your dollars.
And hey look at that, new hair of Brett! The off-season look.
COMMENTERS: Favorite Munchkin card or expansion. Go!
I love Munchkin Cthulhu and all of its expansions and dungeons. My husband was really good at it until he introduced me to it and now he always loses. I just love the combination of cards and how naughty or nice you can be in a game.
I love Munchin Zombies and Cthulhu. Sweet games. Love todays comic thanks.
I love the Chimera card. Really fun when playing epic munchkin! I hope I can get my fiancée to play munchkin with me one day soon. I just now tricked her in to starting to watch Doctor Who on occasion (she loves mysteries and horror, episode 9, season one was her introduction episode for good reason.)
The Cheat card, ANY CHEAT CARD. You wouldn’t be a munchkin without it!
So are they playing Munchkin between the two of them or are there others present at this to have to flee the room? XD
And Cheat, of course.
One of the happiest days of my life was when my (at the time) non-gamer wife asked me to help her roll up a character for the Hackmaster campaign that I was about to start running.
Six years later and that character just hit 12th level. 🙂
Met my girlfriend through WoW. She lived an hour away. I lured her down here with promises of Settlers of Catan and DMing for her. Turns out she never left, and now we’re about to go up a tier in our relationship. So, we’re a couple whose history has been largely shaped by gaming, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As for Munchkin, I’ve found that my enjoyment of the game goes down the more cards are added. There’s a point where the monsters become so easily modified that nobody can get past level 5 without being screwed by the rest of the group. So for that reason, I would say the original set is my favorite.
I thought in Munchkin the last level had to be a combat win?
As your friendly local SJ games MIB (demo agent), normally, you’re right. But Divine Intervention trumps that. (though technically it would happen when the card is drawn and couldn’t be held in her hand, but, well, its a webcomic and hilarious to see Brett get beaten, therefore I like it)
She could do it if she gets away with it. th rules encourage you to try and cheat by “being munchkin” XD
Brett looks like he lost weight too. Must be the hair! 😉
Duck on your head
I’m a fan of original Munchkin, maybe mixed in with Cthulhu. My group also plays Zombies, but we’re all generally agreed on the original/cthulhu combo.
But I DO want to get them all. Muahahaha.
My favorite card is the extra card I keep hidden in my hand so that my friends don’t know that I am way over the card limit.
We have a rule that if no one calls you out on it, you are good to go. We also encourage cheating when we play. There have been numerous cutthroat Munchkin games as a result. (And somehow we’re all still friends.)
That’s the wonder of munchkin. You can turn into complete, evil geniuses and still be friends. And cheating is encouraged in only a few games. Munchkin is one, and Killer Bunnies is another.
Love Munchkin regardless of the pack. each has it’s own appeal!
Munchkin Zombies is pretty great. Really feels like they worked to make the game fit the theme, rather than the opposite (as some of the expansions tend to be).
My absolute favorite has got to be Munchkin Axe Cop, though. The ridiculous world of Axe Cop is just perfect for what Munchkin strives to offer, and the cards just amp the hilarity to 11.
Big fan of the Original but got Zombie Munchkin for christmas and it’s been hitting the table a lot. 🙂
So I only started reading all these yesterday, and been playing catch up since, and I got to say I’m loving it all. But you’re only just now getting to a Munchkin?! Was worth it though. Great job.
just found this comic and had to comment when you hit this one. I played this for the first time at Christmas of 2011 and it was awesome. We stopped one friend from winning with the crabs. He looked for trouble with the lvl 1 crabs and everyone at the table beefed it up to lvl 30. In doing that, we let the next guy win, cause we had all wasted our good stopping power.
Isn’t beating a monster the only way you can get the final level in Munchkin? As for my favorite card: the Blank cards you get in “Unnatural Axe” that let you create your own cards 😛
As for which card I’ve created using them, I’d have to say it’s a tie between “The Belt of Gender Equality” which makes you BOTH sexes and has the standard gender change/treatment rules; or the “Scroll of Iwin”. Play during any combat and instantly win, no matter what the odds are and you get all the xp and loot whether you were the main combatant or simply the helper.
ah, just saw that “divine intervention” allows it.
My favorite set is probably Super Munchkin, although I certainly have a soft spot (and a bunch of expansions) for the original.
Favorite card? Probably the Magnificent Hat from Clerical Errors. With artwork by Phil Foglio depicting a Jagermonster wearing said hat.
Another favorite? “Blow Up Entire Small Country: Go Up A Level” from Munchkin Impossible.
I don’t think John and Steve really care why you buy the game. I would like to see someone wright these house rules down somewhere 😉
