Now the question for Brett is: Does he tell them how much damage his flaming dice rolled, or does he fudge so they can try to save Annabelle and continue the adventure?
It does. Gotta say, I respect him being able to kill a character he probably wanted to pick back up. That being said, it looks like he made this encounter off-balance and may or may not want to fudge. Since he has a rep as a power gamer, I think it might be better to fudge in this case, but we’ll see.
It’s not first time rolling up these characters though? These are from several prior sessions, not fresh ones made for this game, so I can see why he’s hesitant, they finally let him Gm (after his past history of being a REALLY BAD GM/Player in general) and their characters all get one-shotted? Totally not Brett’s intent but I’d be miffed lol
I’m not against fudging rolls but in this particular circumstance to maintain fairness he has to be unfair to his wife. If he’d done this to Carlos it’d be a different story but to keep things civil he has to treat Jeanie as the bad ass she is.
Well, the fun part is that they specified that they have the diamonds for a *single* casting of revivify. So having someone else die would be interesting and force them to choose. (Probably resulting in Burg being revived considering the cleric doing the reviving is his brother). Also, damn, they really made revivify better in 5e. A third the price and a full minute instead of a single round. An extra 9 rounds to resurrect someone is an eternity in combat time lol. But Burg’s pretty tanky, he might survive whatever absurd amount of damage Brett just rolled. Hopefully the casters can rain enough hell on this thing to end this quick before it keeps shredding people.
so is the Grave Wurm a fusion of monsters? I see the swallow of the Rhemoraz and Purple Worm? (with about the same effects) not that swallowing players is THAT uncommon for large/huge monsters with Bite attacks.
that said, i think Brett HAS made the rookie GM mistake of putting overpowered monsters against improperly leveled characters (unless its DESIGNED to be a slaughterfest) just to see how many times the characters die and have to be ressurected. i remember one game we were all third level characters when we get attacked by a SINGLE purple worm and everyone got swallowed one after the other…
or he’s reverting into the adversarial role too quickly, and not adjusting the encounters to fit the scenario (im under the impression that they were supposed to have resupplied in town BEFORE going to the vault)
oh. and by slaughterfest, it was a one-shot dungeon for BECMI rules, that had a party of 6 8th level characters, geared with maximum plus armor and weapons against companion and masters level monsters. (ie 3-5x their level) and the idea was to see if we really HAD been too liberal with magic items in our games. (we werent quite monty haul, but instead most everyone had +3 gear by 15th level and +4 or better by 25th….)

And there’s the added complication that he may have just one-shot his wife’s character.
Technically it’s Brett’s character that Jeanie is filling in for while he’s dming.
Whoa. I don’t know the rules, but does that mean Brett’s character is dead next time he plays?
It sure does. Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out..

“The living do not tread these halls…”
…for long.

That’s the first time I’ve seen the anxiety really break through to Brett’s face. Hang in there, buddy.
I have pulled that face so many times as DM. I can’t help but feel for Brett.
That’s a drama face if I ever saw one. He knows exactly what he’s doing!
Gah! The tension is palpable! 😮
… and this is where Burg gets to go all MIB2 on that worm, and kill it from the inside. Not so incidentally, rescuing Annabelle in the process.
We’ve all been there… except Brett. What does he do?! Whew.
Eh, it’s early in the game. If you kill everyone, reset and make new characters.
That’s part of the fun of the game.

Well at least Carlos will have a friend to laugh about TPK’s with.
Oh damn. The Crit Has hit the fan…..
Oof, I’ve been there.
I don’t use my pink dice when I GM anymore. They just love to kill PCs.
The problem with making a dungeon specifically to kill the PC’s is that you can really succeed. X)
YOU HAVE A SCREEN FOR A REASON YOU POOR MAD FOOL.
Remember, Brett, poker face is your friend!

“My dice are on fire…”
Just another way of saying “Your characters have displeased the gods. Prepare to reroll.”
There’s no way for this to be a true TPK though. After all, one of them is already dead.
Well, the party is having their last dinner now… 😀
They are the dinner…
Okay, who’s also hungry?

Ouch. That is a rough first outing Brett. You’ve got this……

When your DM dice are defying probability, things can get hairy (or boring, if they are defying them on the low side). Been there.
My old DM had a set of dice like that. He called them his blood dice, for when they were rolled, the blood of PCs spilled.
The ONLY time my done are on fire.
Grr, dice*
