It’s mentioned a few times throughout the comic. When Mel was playing Sam’s revenge DnD game, she rolled a 20 using a pink die with a Hello Kitty skull and crossbones for the 20.
And when Mel was first introduced into the group she’s seen holding a Hello Kitty themed dice bag, implying that her previous d20 was part of a matching set.
If they’re anything like my group, dice which roll onto the floor and aren’t found immediately tend to accumulate into the community dice basket until claimed.
This is either going to go really, really well, or really, *really* badly. I don’t know what level they all are, but I’m going to bet that Sam probably won’t be able to do that again *and* get Annabelle back on her feet.
Is it Lightning, that bolt of his? Hope the damage is the right amount to cause the worm to vomit, but not so much that the stomach acid conducts the elctricty and roasts his friends. Also, interesting name; guiding instead of guided. What is it guiding? Guess we’ll find out.
Spell description -https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Guiding%20Bolt#content. It’s radiant damage, and the next attack targeting the worm will have advantage, hence the guiding part of the name. Sam spent a 3rd-level slot on the spell, so it’s going to do 6d6 damage.
Of course, Sam has to hit to have any effect. (Good luck, Sam!)
1 in 6 ^ 8, which is 1679616, or 0.0000006% chance. You are pretty much exactly correct!
What I would call BS on is that all the dice landed facing exactly the same direction :-p (But let’s be fair to our awesome artist Brian, that is a lot easier to draw)
They also may be lining up the dice so everyone can see the count. I do the same some times, it’s a little OCD but my brain has a easy time with the dots
What would that look like, please? I’m not much of a D&D player. Is there the chance that the spell would blowback on him? Is there just not enough distance for the spell to get up to full strength? Just trying to understand.
That’s a good question. I don’t play 5th edition d&d, so it’s hard for me to say. Disadvantage is when you roll two d20 and take the worst of the two roles. Given you can see a caster focusing on a Target I would say that the worm manages to shift its bulk out of the way of the spell if Sam misses.
Not really. Disadvantage just lowers your chances of landing the hit, it doesn’t increase odds of bad things happening. In 5th ed the only time a spell *could* conceivably blowback on you is if it’s inscribed on a spell scroll at a level higher than your highest possible slot, at which point you have to make a roll to see if you’re successful or not. In this case, Guiding Bolt is the poster child for Offensive Cleric Spells, so there’s no question that Calvis knows it and is casting from his own knowledge rather than an inscription.
I’m just surprised by the fact they use dotted D6s. My party just uses the D6s that come with standard seven-piece d&d sets and those all have numbers.
I’m glad Trevor didn’t say “Smashing that like I smashed your Brother!!”
‘Cause I kinda think that might have derailed the game.
*sings* GUIDING BOLT! UP THE BUUUUUUTT!
Yahtzee!
Hello Kitty Dice… was it borrowed if not I want the origin story
“Hello Kitty Brings the Pain!!”
Never roll the Hello Criutty if you want the PCs to live.

(Mel’s the hand on the last panel, she not formally introduced until two strips later.)
Brett might have since borrowed her set or gotten one of his own.
they called it the Hello Critty dice at some point
Maybe Mel gave it to him as a souvenir of their team-up during the Evil Sam episode…
Yep, I may forget my own name some mornings, but I never forget a good plotline! 😀
…Also, I really like souvenirs!

Time for another crit…
Critical failure, that is… Will we get another TPK? 🙂
Btw… Where can I buy those Kitty dice? 🙂

If I’m to guess from people who totally rolled their stats for real, the chance of getting three sixes out of 3d6 is about 1:3
Brett rolled 8 sixes?? o.0 Isn’t that like a 1 in 1.7 million chance?
No fair using magic powers on the dice, Brett!

Play long enough and it’ll eventually happen. Always at the worst possible time.
Burg went in eyes open! OMG
Hello Critty, you are a cruel mistress.
Its worse. He’s adjacent to the worm… he’s at disadvantage for the ranged spell attack, isn’t he?

RAW, yes, but I know I’ve ignored/forgotten that rule more than once, especially when it comes to making spell attacks.
Given Brett’s point of order with the shadow staff, I suspect he normally wouldn’t. But with how this encounter is going, he might let it slide…
Thank you.

Thanks for that.
… find out on the next page of Dragon & Dungeon Ball Z!
Could Brett’s luck be some otherworldly entities way of alienating everyone from Brett/Santa? Brett rolls well, everyone else rolls ‘1s’…
My personal favorite Offensive spell! GO IN SAM MY DUDE!!!

Bless the gods for the fighters to have one of the lergast hp in the game (The Barbarian have the highest in the game.)
Hello Critty! still my favorite dice to use!
