Shattered Honor – Part Thirty-Seven
Chapter: Season Ten
I like to think they are more “each others” now, but that’s nothing to worry about. Nope. Nothing at all.
And yes, the cave-ins are a direct response to Brett trimming content for time. We’ve all been there, Buddy.
Speaking for PCs everywhere, I’d like to “Ignore the literal writing on the wall” for 200, Alex.
Especially if the writing says: “I prepared Explosive Runes this morning!” π
Hmm, nothing important down there. So… cave in. Bet it is filled in on Brett’s version of the map.
I alluded to as much in the blog post. It’ll be fine.
*alluded
Sorry, just one pet peeve among too many. π
I was there if you’d not done it.
“Hello, my name is Gyffes, and I’m a grammarian…”
I’m sorry that me and this site are a barrage of pet peeves for you.
I didn’t mean YOU triggered multiple pet peeves. Just that I have them.
Mostly, just word substitution things, like rogue/rouge.
:'( :'( :'(
So, from a flavor perspective, do the skulls with glowing eyes represent souls yet to steal or souls already stolen? I see 5 red-eyed skulls visible on the guard, one blank-eyed at the end of the handle, and I assume for symmetry there are three with unknown eyes on the other (unseen) side of the guard.
The sword is found with 1d8+1 charges – so, 2 to 9.
Nine skulls = nine charges. At least one has been used up; I suspect the three skulls on the far side of the guards are also lit, as I would expect them to “go out” in a balanced pattern. Thus, I’m willing to bet that each glowing-eye skull is an UNused charge … leaving EIGHT charges for Annabelle.
… how many lives did that manipulative bitch have, again? π π π
Normally charges represent magic in the item being used up. But in the case of the nine lives stealer, isn’t it taking the life force from someone you killed? What if each lit up skull represents the life force of a creature now in the sword?
*Counts skulls* ….are there 3 more on the other side of the cross guard?
Yes. Xero. There are.
So, eight charges. Nice.
Great work as always Brian, like your visual interpretation of a “Nine Lives Stealer”
So . . . Annabelle was dead for a few minutes (which brings some Karthun related character complications/baggage) and is now wielding that sword – don’t think this ends well
PS – those rocks are likely “paperweights” for the prepped material Brett cut earlier
Less than a minute – I think a single minute is all you get? It’s not very long.
Personally, I’d love some more details about “death/near death” in Karthun, the permanence of death in Karthun (seems MUCH more so than other settings, which is mostly good, I think?), and “Karthun related character complications/baggage” that comes with near death.
Is there a decent summary somewhere?
I looked at the first 2 panels and thought for a second that we’d jumped back into a IGS campaign. Great stuff.
I usually don’t trim content. I just accept a dungeon crawl isn’t going as fast as it should and figure if the players are having a good time, it will end up going more than one session.
Brian — you are telling a great story, so please take this a minor question: Where did the 2 hours go in the session? It was either a long intro and/or a very long time for a 3 round combat (of which one round only the graverot acted).
That is a totally fair question. A lot of the time, I cut some of the downtime that we all experience at the table. Things like setting up the maps and minis, little rules checks, etc. The intro was a bit long, they were doing skill checks, and from the narrative side of things, it was good to keep the story moving.
Cool. That makes a lot of sense. π
Too bad we can’t always do that in RL game sessions. π
For the record, that’s exactly how good writing is done. It’s also why you never see people going to take a leak in the movies. Unless there’s a monster in the bathroom that needs to get onstage…
Now I want to see Brian’s artistic take on an otyugh, or the dreaded “privy mimic”
How about a purple worm under the outhouse? I believe that was Mines of Madness.
Nice artwork! Especially on the sword!
That magic item is unfortunately very very bad.
Brian,
You can be my DM anytime. Since that’s not happening, I love enjoying it through these comics!
“Appear” One of my favourite DM words.
