Shattered Honor – Part Thirty-Nine
Chapter: Season Ten
I like that this page illustrates how the group immediately pumped the brakes once Brett played the Tomb of Horrors reference.
I wrote this one a while back and it might be a page I go back into later on and rework the Brett panel, but I like that I am keeping the content flowing for a good long while.
I am learning/accepting that no page will ever be “perfect” and that moving the story forward is what I love, and it keeps everyone happy too.
Have a great weekend, everyone! I’ll see you on Monday.
Brett going old school adversarial DM feels in character. Despite his earlier “Cool before Rule” call I can see him putting the players through the good ole dungeon crawl paces.
He is wrestling with his doubt behind the screen (and I hope that is coming across), so he is trying to balance cool vs. rule and all of the things that DMs struggle with. He is not going for their throats just yet. He is just trying to lean in and escalate the tension.
This arc has done a great job of capturing what it’s like to DM for the first time, with the added bonus of experienced players. Even an old dog like me who has 40+ years behind the screen remembers what that’s like. Your writing really nails how gaming at the table goes down.
Or he is engaging in some enforced method acting with his players, getting them worked up and tense.
I think it’s theatre.
I’m sure it’s just an old farmer in a ghost costume.
“And I would’ve gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for you danged kids!”
Maybe it’s Don Knotts?
I can’t not express in words how much I’m loving this story arc!!! π
er, can not express… durr
I think your Brett panel is great. The couple of loose hairs at the top while most is smoothed down, and the general composition is reminding me of the King of Seasons right before he laughed and said he likes Jeannie.
Love this so much. Also, you pump “brakes” not “breaks.”
fixed
Santa Clause is coming to town early.. SO GOOD! LOL!
Sounds more like something I read a long time ago.
“I’m gonna find out who’s been NAUGHTY and who’s been NICE…and then I’m gonna TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES!”
You are actually inspiring me to get back behind the screen… something that hasn’t happened in nearly 2 decades.
What happens if they turn right and just go down those stairs? Maybe spray paint “NOPE NOPE NOPE” on the face as they go by.
Hahahaha that’s cute. It’s like you think they’re not firmly locked onto the rails here.
Okay, so I’m careful. I have Hobbit Nature as far as adventure is concerned. Worse–if I was a gamer I’d probably use whatever character is the sort that goes in after the rubble stops bouncing and the smoke clears and quietly roll the corpses for stuff.
50% chance of TPK, 50% chance that Bret’s just playing mind games with them and it actually isn’t Tomb of Horrors.
If he’s just playing mind games, he’s doing a pretty good fake-out. 3 doors with 2 leading to death by stone-crusher, green devil face with gaping mouth…
the only thing that might argue in favor of a fake-out is the presence of the monster…
As a fan (on both sides of the screen) of the Tomb of Horrors, i have to wonder if its REALLY the tomb or if the image is there to scare the crap out of them (like it should for ANY sane player) sadly though, this IS the best known trap from the dungeon, so everyone SHOULD know to stay out of its mouth, or to start by placing something in its mouth. preferably a 10′ pole about 2′ in. if it comes back sizzling and shorter…
yeah babies, you be fooked….
otherwise, advance cautiously, slowly, and check for traps every breath.
Been wondering about that.
If it was me, I’d be tempted to put the lethal certain-death trap on the stairs, and make the face hide the safe way onwards, just to see if it would cost them another character death to figure it out or not… π
Sometimes I can be a sadist!
