Aw, Brett’s grown so much, when I started reading the comics I couldn’t STAND him, because he was literally how a LOT of guys treated me when I got into DND, angry, yelling jerks that gave me shit for being a vagina haver at their game of make believe and dice.
He’s come such a long way and you’ve done such an amazing job of writing him <3 A++!
I am so sorry that happened to you. Having a daughter really opened my eyes to a lot of subtle stuff that goes on, but this sounds like it was far from subtle. TTRPG’s are at their best when they allow us to boldly dream of a better, more inclusive and accepting world while demonstarting we will probably have to fight for it. They are at their worst when they devolve into an elitist intellectual pissing contest between theological-lawyer-engineers with emotional dwarfism.
Kudos to you to seeing past the worst of us. I doubt I could have, and I hope my daughter is as brave as you when she inevitably needs to be. Whatever she chooses as her thing, a-holes are ubiquitous.
..and to pull it back in Brian, that’s why I keep coming back, man. Your stories capture and promote what is best about the hobby, and is unapologetic about examining the very human natures of the players that make it live. Thank you, too, brother.
Yeah, I had guys SCREAM because I didn’t instantly know the rules, make nasty things happen like “Your chainmail Bikini you just got just stuck to your skin and won’t come off even though you didn’t put it on” and things like Male players turning into creepy, nasty jerks because I must be into them if I am playing their game, I’ve just found guys more than worth playing with.
It’s just that this hobby sometimes draws out antisocial trash that have really horrid/distorted views, and the trick is to realize that garbage floats to the top, but so does cream, learn to skim off the scum and enjoy the rest of it eh?
Brian’s the first writer I’ve read a webcomic about DND that really captures how a lot of these bad gamers are, and even more, managed to take ONE of those characters, have him change over time, and become one of my favorites, heh it’s great.
Also I wouldn’t call myself brave, just ridiculously stubborn, and far too spiteful for my own good, a lot of people will give you crap for a lot of things, the trick is just being unwilling to accept it.
Speaking from direct experience of playing alongside two of them (one a natural min-maxer, and the other a fantasy artist with the most epic imagination I’ve ever seen)…
Girl gamers kick ass… Critical hit kicks to many asses in fact… In style! *drops mic*
…
*notices the “No Littering” sign and picks up the mic again…* 😐
I remeber when I got banned from the game store in my town brought my girlfriend to a dnd event so we could enjoy my hobby together and some fucker was being greasy as fuck in game. I killed his character cuz I am proud to be a min maxer he called my girlfriend a cunt and I choke slammed him through the table good times good times.
I do apologize for the bad examples of the male gender. I personally have only played a one-shot with only males at the table. Every other time I’ve played there was at least one female. In fact, my usual group was started by a girl.
It’s a shame that in our modern world people still judge eachother by things like gender and age.
I am not an eloquent man and not everyone deserves to be talked through their toxicity at the table, Some will just spin the story about how they were the victim to the prick at a game store who brought a girl to a game the story was paraphrased for the sake of brevity but some people are not worth words.

Maybe don’t brag about how you were a trash human via using physical violence over words eh????

That’s a remarkably healthy reaction to all that. Brett is gonna be fine.
Brett still has some work to do, but it has been a long journey and I like to show that growth. I’m rooting for him.
Paarthunax had it called, here. It can be better to start out as bad and become good through great effort.
