Yeah, when I was building the stats for the script of this encounter I briefly considered using them. After I looked at the levels of the characters and what I wanted the Aspect to be capable of, I decided to leave them out.
This is why my friend has a dice jail for bad dice.
And why I pre roll my dice and take the higher ones. Or roll consecutively a dozen or so times to make sure it looks ‘balanced’.
After a bad die session, one of my friends would take his dice out to the sidewalk, line them all up, and ‘execute’ the worst offenders with a hammer while the rest watched. Another guy I heard about would line the dice up on a chair in front of the oven while he melted down the worst offenders on a cookie sheet.
Why yes, the local game stores did a WONDERFUL business in selling dice, why do you ask? 😉
I feel that there’s going to be an incoming rage quit. TBH, I feel Brett went to far on this particular quest and should’ve given some wriggle room. This is gonna end in a complete wipe I feel.
I really don’t think Brett can take the blame for that many bad rolls in a row. And Brett said “sorry” four times! He doesn’t like this result any more than the players do, but a good DM plays it, as Brett says, “right down the middle.”
Brett is doing a great job with his first outing as a DM. But if he asked for my feedback, I’d suggest that “miss” is a bit of a poor reward for a dice roll, even a crappy one. I like to tell people things like “the orc knocks your blade aside” or “you know the lunge is clumsy even as you make the attack, and the dark elf laughs as he easily dodges your blow”. You don’t need to give a full narrative for every dice roll, but it can really help the immersion in the fight if it’s more than just “miss”, “miss”, “hit – roll for damage”…
On the “bright” side: Burg was Brett’s character to start with (if memory serves). So at the least he’s killing his own character, not one Jeanie created. Not that that’s gonna do much for the frustration of dice-betrayal and a potential death.
So Brian, I’m curious. For this kind of scene, do you plan out the roll results purposefully, or do you actually roll behind the scenes and craft the story around it?
I’m assuming the former, but I’d be highly amused by the latter considering the amount of bad luck they’re having. X)
I know Jeanie’s pain about the dice gods… This week was session 0 for a new campaign and we were rolling stats on new characters… DM let me reroll stats twice before telling me to either take one more reroll or take the array cause the dice kept feeding me all scores below 10 with a few exceptions.
Should that second text box be a different color? That makes it look like brett is saying the line and I’m pretty sure it’s Jeanie. As for the dice rolls, yeah, that’s a rough time. At least we can be grateful there’s no fumble charts in 5e. I’m playing a gurps campaign right now, and rolling a crit fail on a spell is a terrifying thing.
Momentum is definitely building in a direction. Oof.
i’m there right now! i rolled 3 nat ones today, and when i rolled with advantage i got a 3 and a 4! ;( ;(
Also….I am glad we didnt get any Lair Actions..this fight is clearly hard enough. 🙂

Lol I don’t punish my dice but if one rolls well at a important time they get placed higher up above the other dice to be a example of good behavior.

We know that Burg is going to be using his reaction to shit his pants.

totally feeling Brett here. I was running a game where the dice were against the closest thing I had to a “romantic interest” at the time.

It’s never a good sign when the GM apologizes before telling you the outcome. ( F )

I took the array and rolled once more for shits and giggles, just to see what I would’ve missed. Glad I took the array.
Will we get a chance to see the full rules of this ‘module’ that you are using in this comic arc?
I would love to run it with a group of mine.
Called someone calling him shredder! Hehe
Ouch. We’ve all been there.
