“So, your PC has been imprisoned, and you’re a deep cover operative who looks just like them. Your primary objective is reporting their actions and influencing their path. Failing that, sabotage their tactics with less effective actions and usage of your abilities. You’re what’s known as a changeling, and other than this not being your true self, everything on your sheet stands save for purpose and motivation…”
At least that’s what I did the last time I walked someone away from the table. Prior to that it was “Nothing happened, you’re fine, but they won’t believe you because I’m gonna grin a lot when they ask you.”
Had something like that in one in a World of Darkness game. The de facto leader got captured and tortured by Formori and they sent a shapeshifter to replace him and spy on us. DM spoke to the player in the other room and admittedly we did not figure the ruse out until we got some deus ex machina in the form of a friendly Wraith attached to our group.
Frankly, for anybody who has run the original tomb, the fact that Brett is even rolling dice should be taken as a positive (or, perhaps, less-than-catastrophic) sign.
I take it as a sign that Brett has something interesting in mind.
Hmm, if he’s not killing Carlos’ character..? Gul’Ren is some kind of supernatural being if I recall: I would play it as his supernatural side is what gets the whammy from the trap, saving the character as such and driving home an important lesson. Or perhaps Brett just randomized all the traps and their effects, so any trap in there can have any effect.
Or maybe the trap destroyed his physical body, but didn’t damage the elemental he was bound with, and Carlos is now playing as an unleashed shadow elemental…
Not too sure how elementals work in Karthun, but given they were both captured and bound to each other against their will, maybe the elemental saved his spirit, although now things are reversed and he’s now bound to the elemental instead of the other way around. The drawback to this is that he’s now compelled to seek out the people who captured them and take revenge! 🙂
(Yeah, I get some wild ideas after weeks of replacing sleep with increased caffeine intake!)
My DM in college did this with me once. I picked up my character sheets and papers, and walked out with him. Forget even what it was about, but I folded up my character sheet, stuffed it in my back pocket, and came back into the room tearing up one of the extra sheets of paper. The look on the groups face was priceless.
My character was in trouble, but not dead, as we were all expecting.
“Gotta pull you into another room to discuss just how awesome this new amazing magic item you just got, buddy!” – Brett, probably.
Probably.
Here’s hoping!

“Drawback, the item is now in your gut.”
Hello darlin’
Nice to see you
It’s been a loooooong time
That last panel is just delightful. I feel really bad for Carlos and I’m smirking at the gag at the same time. Frickin well done, dude.
Love Brett’s face in that that fifth panel.
Just the sheer “How did I roll THAT?”
“Sometimes you need to roll hard six”
“Sometimes you need to roll hard six”

A lot of times killing someone is the least interesting thing you can do to a character
As I have told friends “If you kill someone, they’re no fun anymore!”
You don’t know enough Necromancers.
Perhaps supplement it to “If you JUST kill someone, they’re no fun anymore!”

Carlos’ dump is complete. Brown pants, y/n?
Well, he didn’t ask for his character sheet.
Payback for the BSOD he gave Brett a while back when he said “no dice?â€
Lol.
The capital T on that “Terror” is the kind of attention to detail I love.

Fiend! Dish!

Poor Carlos. His butthole is making the windows shutdown noise.
Oops. Should’ve puckered hard when you had the chance.

Oh fuck…wait.. wait…but if (and I do stress the if) it’s killing Gul’Ren… and he’s a magebound… the elemental…
