My prediction is either a Walking Treasure (yes, I cheated and referred to my Karthun setting book) or a room full of chest shaped mama mimics and coined shaped baby ones.
Will Sam/Calvis resist the urge of his inner Daffy Duck? (“I’m rich, I’m wealthy, I’m socially secure!”)

Sam is in the right mind frame, very well done rp. My character, a half dragon, would be thinking the same damn thing. “I know its cursed, but I must have it.
If you really want to mess up your players and thier characters with that kind of trap, have the coins and knicknacks be made of radium or some other highly radioactive material. You can as GM describe it in terms that makes it obvious to the players, but how would characters in a fantasy setting have any knowledge at all about radiation? (Que the GM: “Told you I had planned for one of you to play an alchemist, but oh well…”)
Every trap builder knows, if your targets are on the alert and actively searching for traps, just toss a load of treasure bait at them and watch their attention span drop sharply… Along with their remaining HP!
Works every time! 😉
The one Thing i never understood with These treasure piles is….why have chests with Gold on top of the Gold? (Especially when the pile belongs to a Dragon)
why not just empty out the chests onto the pile too and use them for other Things or get rid of them or store them separatly.
its not really bothering me that much its just one of These Things that i Always wondered.
Also, at least in pictures, it provides a bit of nuance/texture to the pile. Instead of coins bluring into each other, you have visual breaks, creating points of interests.
Even if isn’t “trapped”, it could still be a trap. Timed mission. If you are going to take the risk you aren’t going to be satisfied grabbing a handful of gold on the move.
Even if there were physical warning signs saying “Caution: Trap” that immediately appeared in front of the faces of everyone in that room in the native language of that person by a safety-conscious sorcerer, my halfling rogue would still be reaching for his shovel and loot sack.
This is one of those “But what would my *character* think of this in this moment?”
especially given his character’s religious aspect
Sam? Sam! NOOOOOooooooo….. *In Force Ghost voice*
Sam, yes!
Its obviously a reverse trap.
Detect Magic… Detect MAGIC!
Useless on mechanical traps but oh so useful for giving players false confidence.
Especially when you mix mundane and magical traps
Also very useful to keep players on their toes when an object is enchanted to look magical and nothing else.
I’d hear him out.
Unless…

My guess would have been a gold golem.

Grimtooth’s, if I recall.
Sodium sheathed in gold foil. bite into it and BOOM
Annnd another one giving me some serious Grimtooth vibes…
Or possibly the Tempts Fate adventure with the exploding coins…
Folks always ask me why my mages always have Unseen Servant prepared.
This is why.

The chests are for the fancy stuff. Works of art, jewelry, matched set of gold goblets – stuff you don’t want getting lost in the pile of coin.
Also, at least in pictures, it provides a bit of nuance/texture to the pile. Instead of coins bluring into each other, you have visual breaks, creating points of interests.
ywah i guess that makes sense
i would give you that, except that in many other Pictures said chest are open on the pile and there is just more Gold coins inside.
Place yer bets folks!
-Trapped

Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg!
Monsters, death saves, outer pla-anes
It’s a Duck-blur!
Relatable AF.
CURSED COINS have they not read ready player one or look through the tomb of horrors first edition?

I’m imagining something akin to an Indiana Jones switcharoo. Go for it, Sam! (Cursed?) Fortune favors the bold!
