Chapter: Season Four
It’s probably a good thing Sam doesn’t have access to the Narrative yet (nope, I didn’t forget about it. All in due time) and hey look, a Dungeon Run reference. It seems like a lot of little things and running story elements are coming back around.
anxiously waiting for more.
Thanks, Tommy! That is always nice to read. 🙂
I wonder why Grey is here anyway. It’s not like he’s going to play…
…right?
Maybe he’s Dove’s ride.
He is Dove’s cousin and protection. Phillip Dove is hated in the gaming community and in my mind, his ego has provoked someone to threaten violence in the past. Now, he employs Grey to keep the “neanderthals” at bay.
My god… every time I see Grey I can’t help but hate him more and more. He’s like every jock that I went to high school with rolled into one…
Kudos to you Brian for writing a character that I instinctively want to disembowel.
Sadly, I have met several “Greys” over the years.
Also, yes. If I had that kind of power, no one calling the service centre at work would be safe…
“Don’t tell me what the issue is, I already know what it is. I consider myself to be very tech savvy, and I was on the google… Hey, why are your eyes glowing?” *VRRRRRR-POP*
FYI, that conversation was word for word an actual conversation with one of our users, at least right up until the glowing eyes bit. I feel conflicted about it… on the one hand, I was infuriated, but on the other, I can’t help but feel that I’ve been witness to one of the funniest sentences that will ever be uttered. I mean come on. “I consider myself to be very tech savvy, and I was on the google.” So in that regard, I feel a little lucky.
I’m not a violent person, nor a gun nut, but I feel I should point out two things. First, in most states, Grey could be legally shot at this point. He has a history of violence and assault, and just threatened Sam with bodily harm in Sam’s shop, which means that Sam has already “retreated to the wall”. Secondly, I am perplexed as to why Sam has not pursued legal action against Grey. Given Grey’s previous assault, and his penchant for violence, Sam needs to turn the court system loose on Grey. A few police officers screaming “stop resisting!” and whaling away with nightsticks and Grey would be brought down to a more appropriate level – say, crippled for life.
On further reflection, I’ve deleted my RSS feed for this comic. At the age of fifty, I’ve had enough impotent power fantasies to last for what remains of my life. If you decide to write Grey into prison, don’t bother telling me. I have a bad taste in my mouth for your comic that won’t go away.
I just caught this. Best of luck to you out there, Tarliman. It is a huge internet with a lot of great comics. I hope you find some that make you happy.
-facepalm-
Yikes. The butthurt is strong in this one.
There are a few reasons. The main reason being that it’s a comic and while I do like to inject some reality into situations, Grey beating up Sam rode the line. Sure, he could call the cops but then that robs him of the opportunity later to stand up and even the score if he did. If their rivalry goes much further, then yeah, reality will indeed step in.
Just pointing out something here.
Bodily harm is not the same as grave bodily harm, which usually has specific meanings in different jurisdictions.
In most places, it would be illegal for someone to “go for their gun” when all they are facing is bodily harm.
It only becomes legal to pull a gun on someone if you are facing grave bodily harm, and in many places (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, most of California, etc) you aren’t allowed to do even that.
Well given the size difference between Sam and Grey, one punch could provide grave bodily harm. Not to mention the threat is a level of perception. The victim only has to perceive they are in grave danger.
Sam would be within his rights to draw a gun if he truly felt he were in grave danger. Other victims being bigger and able to defend themselves would have a harder time proving this.
As for NY, DC, Chicago, and Cali, no you are allowed to take a gun out and shoot them. The problem lies with the fact that those cities had made it illegal to store a loaded weapon. Once city even went as far as saying the gun had to be disassembled and locked away when not at a firing range. Most of those laws are being over turned case by case.
You can still draw your gun and shoot them, you then have to spend time and money on a lawyer proving it was self defense. Fortunately after a DC conviction was overturned the dominoes started falling elsewhere.
In Los Angeles it is legal for a store owner to open carry a loaded weapon on their person if the door to the public is closed (not propped open). I know, I have several friends who open carry in their stores. I was happily shocked to find out it was legal.
I see “I’m not [X] but…” works for more than racism. My reasoning: if you jump over “the house reserves the right to deny attention | service” straight to “he could be legally shot” and “Sam should pursue legal action”, you might be a violent person. You might want to look into it.
Sadly, if Sam reported him to the police Mel would never talk to him again. Mel is not right in the head to stay with someone like that. I’ve been in similar situations, though I am big enough to protect myself. The victim (even if able to defend themselves) is alwasye looked at like the bad guy by the woman.
I don’t like Grey, and I don’t like Mel’s choices, but at least the author/artist is staying true to the dynamic. If Grey gets sent to prison and Mel doesn’t flip out on Sam then it won’t read true. Mel would have to be written out of the comic for quite a while had Sam reported Grey to the cops after the first encounter.
Pop, goes the Sleazel!
Even though it was just in Sam’s mind, seeing Grey’s head pop like that was incredibly satisfying. I’ve always had a major disdain for this particular brand of douchebag and it’s nice to see them get what’s coming to them.
HAH! Awesome.
Oh maybe The Narrative has levels. Once he gets it that is. Maybe first he can only affect his players which then leads to affecting gamers and then other nerds. It prabably takes a lot of DM experience to be able to explode bros. Or else theyd be a dying breed.
Also im still waiting to gt My DM Narrative… Where are you Larry?!
So my question is, does Grey actually care about Phil? He seems like exactly the type that Grey would typically want to punch on a regular basis.
So what keeps him at bay, and indeed at Dove’s command? Familial respect? Payment? Blackmail?
Must be something big to get Grey to endure an area and situation like this.
Sam is the FIST OF THE NORTH STAR!!
You’ll learn, Phillip…no matter how good you are, there’s always somebody out there who’s better…and he may be standing right in front of you at this very moment…
Am I reading this right? Everything passed the first panel to the panel before the last is in Sam’s head? or does the “riding thise dick” comment actually happen? From my point of view it looks like he zones out the moment he sees grey in panel 1
I read it the same way, I think he’s zoning out into fantasy land pretty much straight away.
Great, now we just need Brett to bring Klaus to the shop, then they can barricade the doors and call in a nuclear strike. Bathe them in the flames of science! Purge the Terrible Trio of d20Monkey Douchebaggery from this Earth in a blaze of righteous fury!
