I still maintain that the King of Seasons isn’t a bad guy. I don’t think Higgens is evil as much as a controlling jacka**, but I still think he needs a spiked kanabo shoved in him. Sideways.
he broke his probation to sooth and be there for his best friend in a time of need. while it may have been in violation of the rules layed down, it was an act in the best spirit of the holiday.
Higgins. I swear to all that is good and holy I will come through this computer screen and ring your little neck if you do anything that hurts Brett. On the other hand, I don’t have that power… yet.
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again – this needs to end with the King of Seasons coming and punching Higgins so hard he breaks through the silos. (Again.)
Man at first I was willing to say Higgin’s was just a rule lawyer asshole attempting to preserve Christmas as best he thought, but that last panel Higgin’s is a villain, either as Greenring7493 stated above or he has his own nefarious ideas. Either way Brian, I love to hate your “D-bag” characters.
You know, while Brett broke his probation by leaving the North Pole, it was for a very short period of time. Seriously, he’s taken craps longer than the time he spent at Sam’s. He did not abandon any of his responsibilities and he maintained the “little to no contact” section of the terms. The King of Seasons is a hard-ass, as a king should be, but he hasn’t been shown to be unjust. For all of Clive’s deep-seated contempt and active antagonism, I can’t see things working the way the Steward of Winter wants.
And it’s not like he just popped over to visit on a whim; his best friend was seriously injured. As much as the King of Seasons is a dick (and only someone with no idea what justice means could say he’s not unjust), he may not be as much of one as Higgins.
Sadly, I don’t think either of them could hurt him; when he first appeared, Jeanie tried, but only the magical could lay hands upon him. His mum definitely doesn’t count, and his dad passed on the mantle and retired.
The short answer: Yep! Right after this arc in fact.
The Not-Long Answer: I’m going to keep telling the stories I want to tell. If it’s 1-2 part gaming strips or longer arcs about the cast, it will always be what I think it interesting and hope that other folks enjoy it as well.
I said it on Twitter, I will say it again here. Brett did the only thing that he could do. If he did not act in the manner he did, he would prove that he was not fit for the Mantle.
That being said, I don’t really think Higgins is a “bad guy” per se. I think he is doing what he believes is right for the Mantle. Not necessarily, for the Mantle-Bearer, or his family, but for the Mantle itself. He thinks that Brett, his mom, and Santa are not really fit for it because they do not have the elitist attitude he does. He feels that it belongs to someone who will treat it like a door to privilege deserving setting the Mantle-Bearer apart as better than the rest. Klaus fits that, but is too evil for it. Higgins does not see Klaus as evil just someone who knows that the Mantle will make him better than everyone else.
In a lot of ways, Higgins is like Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix. As a D&D character his alignment would be Lawful Evil. He will get what he wants using the Law to bring it about.
I guess Higgens either wants the Mantle for himself or he is trying to help Klaus get it because the current Santas have been to forgiving on rule breaking kids.
Up until now, Higgins struck me as kind of an officious bureaucrat, more concerned with upholding the letter of the law to the strictest intent possible than upholding the spirit of, you know, Christmas.
Now… now…
Well, he hasn’t gone full Umbridge yet. But it looks like he’s on his way.
HOVER-TEXT:
Head Canon: I have always heard The Steward of Winter (Higgins) in a Vincent Price-like voice.
Higgins ought to be castrated with a rusty spoon, then doused in kerosene and lit up like a bloody torch.
It’s more like terry-Thomas at his most sneering in mine
I KNEW IT he’s been secretly working for Brett’s uncle this whole time
Higgins is nowhere near awesome enough to deserve THE PRICE. When I bother to acknowledge him enough to give a voice, he gets Droopy the Dog.
Oh…. I want to stomp his face with a stiletto shoe. Especially with the heel taking out either of his eyes…..
I do not wear heels. I have never had any intention of even trying them. I so want to do what you just said though.
Mom is going to break her foot off in Higgins’ ass one day.
Time for Kris to pull out a gat and plug this mope.
I kinda want “Honor before duty” to be the order of the day…
But I can’t see that being how this goes.
Depression sucks…
It is a testament to Brian’s skill as a storyteller that he is able to make antagonists that evoke such powerful emotions in the reader.
Well done.
Why thank you! I do enjoy creating villains/antagonists (they are separate things in my mind).
Well all Villains are Antagonists, but not all Antagonists are Villains. ^_^
What about Villain Protagonists?
Someone seriously needs to geek the Steward.
Ten bucks says higgins is really klaus in another disguise.
I still maintain that the King of Seasons isn’t a bad guy. I don’t think Higgens is evil as much as a controlling jacka**, but I still think he needs a spiked kanabo shoved in him. Sideways.
If you do it sideways that means you’re married in some countries.
So, kind of like how a suitcase to the face in some countries means “Goodbye”?
i think higgens is a dick in need of a massive beat down.

I found his lack of christmas spirit disturbing
Gods I so hope that Kris will tell the little fuck to shut up and stick it in.

well the only act of disobedience i noticed was you know helping a good friend through a hard time
What exactly is the Stewards motive here? I mean he wants to push around Claus? He wants a litteral Nazi as Santa? He wants to burn the World?
I feel like Higgins should of been twirling that dumb, stupid, god-damn ugly, ill groomed mustacthe of his when he said that.
moustache*
… this dude now has a soundtrack:
Untz-Untz-Untz-Untz Eat-Eat-Eat, Eat-Eat-Eat, Eat-UNTZ-Eat-UNTZ-Eat-UNTZEATADICKHIGGINS

Higgins, you’re at the North goddamned Pole, surrounded by MILES of Arctic wasteland. And you’re threatening their son…
No one will find the body when momma murders you.
Sadly, I don’t think either of them could hurt him; when he first appeared, Jeanie tried, but only the magical could lay hands upon him. His mum definitely doesn’t count, and his dad passed on the mantle and retired.
It seems to me that Higgins is taking this chance to be a scheming little turd. I so want to see him get f’d over for being a colossal dick.
So is this comic ever gonna actually be about tabletop gaming again?
Or is this gonna go the way of CAD

I feel that the Doctor is right… as always.

Hey, he didn’t disobey!! He just took a bit on advance on his present-giving task so he wouldn’t be overwhelmed on his Christmas Night!!
why is it that i keep imagining Higgins eyes glowing red??
I guess that Higgins is protected from the naughty list. Can’t imagine him going this long without the Krampus getting his hands on the little-
Y’know, I want to punch his face… IN THE FACE!
