Bingo. That place could attract every gamer in a hundred miles, and it will still bleed money.
Betting that the mech is priced way WAY below profitability, despite the elitism.
You honestly think it’d attract gamers? Seriously, practically every gamer I know would Hiss and/or look at Colin as if he were growing a 2nd head if they were offered a Mimosa and Honey-soaked date wrapped in a baked parmesan crisp at a freaking game store.
In all fairness, this all could just be part of the opening-day celebration. If the “hausmen” stick around afterwards, though, then we’ll know for sure Lee ain’t just in it for the sake of business.
You just described the business model of several historic companies. If they had competition they would sell so cheap they’d lose money, but they knew that they could outlast their opponent, granted it works better if you already have lots of money
Even as a opening day only event this seems quite risky financially. Even if the personal attendants all go away on the second day the costs that they have to absorb for the opening are enormous. They have only 2 ways to go in my opinion: jacking up the prices, which will lead them to failure since there is another store in the city, and the internet, OR keeping competitive prices, which will make them bleed money. Add to this that they are driving away any female, lgbt+ gamer and those that have a girlfriend/wife and I wonder how they think to make money. Even if they manage to outlast pops store then what?
Yeah, personal attendants? Assuming they even earn minimum wage, unless the Game Haus a bunch of PAC’s funding them each quarter (not saying that’s entirely impossible) no way this can go on regularly.
Mmmm, Exalted. Wonderful world, AWFUL system. Anyone have a favorite way of running it? My gamers want me to run it, and I haven’t cast enough d10s yet.
Yeah, as a gamer this would creep me the heck out and I’d be right back out the door. And I think I’m fairly typical of gamers – we generally don’t like people we don’t know getting all up in our business and personal space.
Ultimately this approach backfires if there’s any alternate game store nearby… which will be Sam’s salvation.
I feel like that’s an overly broad generalization. Gamers are a lot more diverse than that รขโฌโ even based on the sampling of folks who come into a booth at, say, Origins. Plenty appear to enjoy someone stepping up and offering personalized knowledge of what’s on offer (plus that approach tends to work better for parents, who usually have a distraction orbiting them at any given moment, and for people who are interested in getting into gaming but typically put off by … the typical).
Arright. So, I’ve been to multiple tabletop stores, and I’ll admit, I don’t know all of the typicals, but, I’m going to put this out here, I’ve been to more then one friendly competition, and I do mean friendly, the awards were worth less then the buyin price, the only real value was getting to hang with people for a few hours.
Most people who go to older style gaming shops (Which this is NOT, this is a newer style, so clearly it might as well have “Games’ Workshop” written as its’ sign instead of Gamehaus), are more traditional nerds. They’re quieter individuals, they’re smaller, they’re more traditionally introverted, they’re going to live off injokes. This introduction would terrify them. But those aren’t the people who this place is going for.
This is, as I stated, a newer style gameshop. This is the sort of place that is made to go with the ‘chique’-ness of appearance. The sort of place that tries to look professional, instead of understated. The sort of place that has all sorts of chromes and needless fanciness and has all the people working dress in uniforms, instead of letting them dress freely. It’s basically the Gamestop of table top stores. From my experience, such places will actually get customers, and not a small number either, but they’ll actually not have any effect on the smaller, hole in the wall places. They’ll exist, both will complain about the other, and when one or the other falls, neither will have any noticable blip in increase in customers or decrease, because neither is actually poaching the customers of the other.
This is from the outside looking in mind, but I’m going to state right now, from my experience, Sams’ brother here basically just placed himself in a position where he can never actually accomplish what he’s going for. He can succeed, certainly, he’s actually got a good staff to succeed (I am -real- curious as to what he’s paying them, and where that money’s coming from), but I cannot see him…well….actually ending up competing with Pops. It’d be like claiming he was competing when he was opening up a bar. Oh, sure, some of Pops’ regulars might end up going to the bar to try it out, see what is going on, especially with the old koot bein’ so up in arms an’ all about this, but….very few’re going to give up a lifelong hobby for a new taste.
Ah… So it’s Apple Store attack. The Best Defense? Look them square in the eye and tell them what you are looking for, you are not interested in anything else, unless you ask about it, to include, any type of extra-warranty(wear and tear of books), extra assessories (be strong, dice fanatics!), pre-ordering of games and/or supplements(the whol preorder thing is really hetting out hand in some cases), or rental/reservation of game tables. Don’t be a dick about it, (they’re trying to earn a living like everyone else) but don’t back down, either.
I don’t like the looks of this….
Feels like they are trying to hard .
THEY’RE DOOMED!!! Doomed I tells yea…
A very specific Trevor Trap.
Colin was ESPECIALLY HIRED to protect from Trevor.
If this arc includes a smoldering rivalry culminating in raucous hate sex I will not be disappointed. :3
And the profit model for this store is… ?
Or is complete and utter financial ruin acceptable as long as the hated rival is ruined first?
Bingo. That place could attract every gamer in a hundred miles, and it will still bleed money.

Sorry, every MALE gamer. Dove has made it rather clear what he thinks of women.
You honestly think it’d attract gamers? Seriously, practically every gamer I know would Hiss and/or look at Colin as if he were growing a 2nd head if they were offered a Mimosa and Honey-soaked date wrapped in a baked parmesan crisp at a freaking game store.
Not into guys, but if a game store was offering Mimosa’s on the house…I’d go there.
In all fairness, this all could just be part of the opening-day celebration. If the “hausmen” stick around afterwards, though, then we’ll know for sure Lee ain’t just in it for the sake of business.
The profit model for the store is revenge, given who’s using what I believe is plenty of disposable cash to finance it. Without that it’s impossible.
So it’s Disney?
Bingo.
You just described the business model of several historic companies. If they had competition they would sell so cheap they’d lose money, but they knew that they could outlast their opponent, granted it works better if you already have lots of money
And for “Historic,” read “Amazon” ๐

Methinks Trevor’s arrival has been anticipated and this is a *very* specific countermeasure…
On the plus side, pretty sure Charlie’s got some material for a new character for his books.
There is no way this is sustainable. Maybe just an opening day event thing?
Yeah, personal attendants? Assuming they even earn minimum wage, unless the Game Haus a bunch of PAC’s funding them each quarter (not saying that’s entirely impossible) no way this can go on regularly.
Yay Exalted Reference…Is the Hausman an Eclipse Caste?
I think it’s a D&D reference – Solars are the most powerful good celestials, basically archangels.
That unfortunately makes more sense. I thought it was an Exalted reference too, until I read your comment. I physically actually deflated. T_T
Mmmm, Exalted. Wonderful world, AWFUL system. Anyone have a favorite way of running it? My gamers want me to run it, and I haven’t cast enough d10s yet.
Ooh, so accurate! I bought a few of the books, but never even tried running or playing. So over-complicated.
If one had the know-how, converting it to Fate Core or PbtA might be viable. (Maybe even GURPS if you’re masochist enough?)
I’ve seen suggestions to use Fate+, which sounds very loosey-goosey… but I’m not sure that it’s a bad idea.
I’ve never touched Exalted, but I HAVE touched GURPS. Can any tabletop RPG system on Earth possibly be more needlessly complicated than GURPS? o_O

Plus seeing as the are kinda elitist they likely are looking for customers of a similar vein and nothing strokes an ego of an elitist like a servant
I say burn it to the ground, and then salt the earth it once stood upon.
“You shall leave me alone, or by Gygax, I shall tell all Critters to Vicious Mockery this store so hard, it will die of the shame.”
Never underestimate the power of spite and/or resentment to make people spend money/go over overboard
