The question then becomes ‘beyond recognition as to identity’ or ‘beyond recognition as a human’. If the coroner’s report is ‘probably a mammal’, you’re in trouble, and if Phylum is indeterminate, it may be advisable to take some vacation time.
Since he stated that it was the body of one of his missing patrolmen, I would assume that identity is the problem rather than being able to tell if it was human. Of course back in that day, grinding everything would make it impossible to ascertain either who it was or what species.

I pulled it into Photoshop and spiked the lighting. The bottom black panel appears to remain a black panel. The center one…does not.
