Harsh Reflections: Part Twenty-Five
Chapter: Season Six
In my canon, that is how a mage bound to an air elemental passes a perception/spot/listen/etc. check to detect hidden attackers. It’s totally an RP thing but it just seems cool that he would notice subtle changes in air currents.
Reminder: Check out the new d20Monkey store for new items! Woo! New stuff!

My three favorite words as a GM.
They’re good, but I’m more a fan of “Are you sure?”
I like to give my players an opportunity to realise what they’re doing is going to get them killed. Doesn’t tend to make much of a difference, but I feel better about their impending doom when they don’t take the hint and go ahead with whatever idiocy they’ve concocted.
And occasionally asking are you sure can put them on edge as well.
Good times
Not 3 words, but I love asking “How?”
For instance…
Player 1- I open the door.
Me- How?
Players- *take twenty minutes devising a plan involving a ten-foot pole, a hook, and clever usage of barrels as cover*
Door- *isn’t trapped*
I prefer hearing my GM say two words, “Oh God”, as it normally means something bad is going to happen, just never sure if it’s bad for us or the NPC’s.
My personal preference lies in “Let’s see where this goes.” I love to roll a bit of uncertainty into my games, keeps my players on their toes and I find it makes the story better because even I don’t know for certain how things will end.
It’s always fun to say those words. But you can make it funnier:
“In the shadows you see a figure. And it whispers ‘Roll for Initiative’ “
“Roll for Initiative” translates to “The fewmets are about to hit the windmill!”
“Roll for Initiative”. I love those words…
Hehehehe… I love saying those three words to my group members… oh the groans some days, like music to my little ears…
Those words…oh how I enjoy them especially with the withdrawal I’ve been going through at the moment.
this is excellent. i love the layout, & the colors fit nicely with that. also – i liked that the mage’s perception check interrupted the argument about bribery..
love it. I play an earth shaper in our GURPS campaign and I constantly use things like this instead of the old “you see something”
FLAVAH!
In our game, my Bard’s Detect Magic gives her different music effects – harps for Enchantment, theramin for Necromancy, etc.
Oh how I love hearing those three words as a player. I always try to think of the craziest ways to make encounters more fun other than “I swing. Roll. Miss. They Swing. Roll. Hit.”
As a player, my encounters are more like after;
Me: “I bring my axe to bear, aiming at his legs.” Roll.
Dm: “Your Axe swings true and with enough power, you manage to swing it clean through the man’s leg before burying it deeply into the other.”
Or This one from last Wednesday…
Me: “I am going to begin to run at the enemy, using 25 feet before jumping with my arm extended out to the side, grabbing at the enemy’s exposed neck before letting my weight bring us both down with his head cradled tightly in my arm.” Roll contesting checks.
DM: Face Palm. “You manage to perform a quick feat and grapple the man as you jump. The force of you coming down managed to break the bandit’s back and neck in several places, evident of the crunching noises upon impact. You feel his body give an involuntary twitch before going limp.
Yeah, I play a 330 lbs, 6’8” Dragonborn Paladin in Plate Mail and with I still managed to succeed on my rolls. I LOVE combat.
Nice RP, Carlos.
My favorite DM utterance? Laughter, but not the evil kind. The kind that indicates something memorable is about to happen.
There was an episode of “Whose Line Is It Anyway” with Will Wheaton as the guest star. Wayne noted that Will was a prominent gaming geek, and asked him for a geek girl pickup line. With just a moment’s thought Wheaton respponded with, “Roll for Initiative.”
