I wish “veteran player” actually meant, “not an asshat” though.
Case in point, at Tekko con in Pittsburgh last week, some “veteran players” had gamer funk during the first slot of the con. FIRST SLOT!
But I don’t think that Sam would have let Carlos into the group if he was an asshat, so this should be an interesting character. Looking forward to it.
As a side note Brian, something I’ve been meaning to say for a while now:
I *LOVE* the detail you put on facial expressions. The little tics, the shading, the subtle (and sometimes not-so subtle) changes in the eyes and mouths – it’s all absolutely fantastic. The Christmas Montage strips are when I fully became aware of it – being able to tell a full story (even a short one) with nothing but body language and facial expressions is quite a rare skill.
I love it when things as simple as facial expressions do so much. Hale doesn’t have to say “I regularly go up against and defeat things that would rip YOU in half, devour your entrails with the immortal essence of your soul as dipping sauce, and then floss with whatever sinew was left. Get the FUCK out of my way before I show you how.” His eyes and jaw say it for him, in far less words.
I know in pathfinder at least, paladins needed charisma pretty badly, at least a +2 to mod in order to have your full range of spells, so definite possibility…
I see Hale as some kind of Cop like per se, But he is a very interesting character indeed. Out the gate, it seem like something is up. We’ll see how this all plays out.
HOVER-TEXT: and that is a natural 20 on an intimidate check.
this is glorious
That +5 to “Bitch, please…” really comes in handy.
I am definitely getting a “Lawful Good does not mean Lawful Nice” vibe off this guy.
Let’s pray he’s not the Lawful Anal type as well. ; )
I don’t think so, not from a veteran player.

Yeah, because asshats never played at his table, ever. 😀
But from how Carlos behaved this far in the comic, I think he is far from that.
I’m liking this campaign so much. Royal butler or not, you don’t mess with a guy with a name like Sentinel Hale.
I hope you are feeling better Brian 😀
Unimpressed Sentinel is unimpressed.
Exactly. LOL.
Badass monk type is Badass
Going off the title text for the last one – I can totally see Hale intoning, “Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate you.”
Absolutely. If you can rock the silent Intimidate check like that, you’re totally on Vader’s level.
I liked how in the last one you can replace “dwarf” with “be-yotch” and it still works.
Is Sentinel Hale gonna have to choke a butler?
…I like this new character already.

Agreed, Joe L. Very much agreed. Even more than good hands, detailed facial expressions are the sign of a good artist for me.
Sentinel Hale don’t take NO SHIT from NO – BODY!

…. I’m not the only person that wants Carlo’s Class, right? :V
“Rudeness, did I say you were rude? Please follow me and don’t choke me with magic please…please”
…I’m assuming Charisma is NOT his dump stat. Either that, or Intimidation is based on something else. Regardless, WHOA.
I know in pathfinder at least, paladins needed charisma pretty badly, at least a +2 to mod in order to have your full range of spells, so definite possibility…

Even though they’re totally different contexts, for some reason this d20monkey comic reminds me of this rustyandco comic.
I love how the shy, reclusive, insecure Carlos transforms into a stern, even intimidating sentinel. That’s what role-playing is all about, isn’t it?
Last time we saw him he was the frickin’ Hulk. Dude can certainly bring the attitude, even if only in the game.
