The inability to breath there would propably be a bigger problem then the heat anyway. But in P&P RPG’s such factors are often ignored anyway. Unless you make a dip in the lava, you will be fine.
Maybe… you can be mage-bound at level 1 though, and complete immunity to fire would be a bit overpowered. In-universe, fire elemental, sure, but the vessel is still human. No reason to think that wouldn’t be a weak link.
He may have got bitten in half by a horrible lava-beast, but the momentum of being thrashed around by the monster carried his upper half to the other side of the lava flow, so technically speaking he DID make it. Crawl onward, Torso Boy! Crawl onward to victory!
If we go by a strict reading of the rules (no, I don’t, just being devil’s advocate here) he is entitled to a fort save to stabilize and then, depending on feat choices, might very well be able to stay conscious long enough to make it through the rest of the dungeon utilizing the fact the he is now much smaller to avoid traps and pitfalls that would await full sized humanoids.
So torso boy would actually be fine, if he were a barbarian. But if there are any barbarian cultures that dress like that, we should probably burn them down in shame.
Although, to be fair, one of the things the -10 rule is meant to simulate is blood loss, and one could argue that as far as his body is concerned he *didn’t lose any blood*! The heat of the teeth that have been submerged in magma would have instantly cauterized the wound, massive as it was, and he would not go into hypovolemic shock – his blood pressure would not drop precipitously. (Shock due to pain is another matter, but even then…) People have survived being squished in half for exactly this reason, so it could be justified by a GM who wanted to!
I figured something like this would happen. It has to. It’s one thing to have the molten lava, which some characters with the right set of Feats/ Skills / spells can make it through, but for those acrobatic types, it only makes sense.
I only say this because a couple years ago, that acrobat was one of my characters from a run I did, granted instead my death was a little more gruesome.
Just to make a side comment about something I’m noticing. We haven’t seen Trevor, Charlie or Phillip Dove yet in the Dungeon Run. I don’t recall whether Trevor or Charlie explicitly stated they were taking part in it, but if so, does this mean we’re going to be seeing them all together in team 4? Granted we haven’t seen two members of Mel’s team, but I would think that if either of them were in it, we’d have seen them.
Regardless, I eagerly anticipate seeing Phillip Dove in this storyline.
I predict a table of girls and Dove being the only ones left. Dove actively TPKs when he realizes that the prize is about to be won by women better than himself. Something he refuses to accept in his worldview.
The skin on his face being different than the legs and arms coupled with what looks like a wrinkle in a sleeve makes me think they’re wearing a body-stocking/long-johns thing under the tabard.
Thought he said,”No teeth.”…… But seriously you really want to mess with them I still say The Dreaded Zimmer…… It’s so bad I’ve seen characters kill each other in game just to keep their character rep in tact….
I don’t have any 4th Ed. rule books, but there is one rule from them I use in my own Pathfinder campaign: exposure to lava. Are you immune to fire damage? Then you’re alive. Do you only have fire resistance (doesn’t matter how high) or no resistance? Then you’re dead.
Didn’t make it
someone rolled a 1
Yup! A roll so bad it flipped back around to awesome. Simple failure would’ve landed him in the lava. Super Failure? Lunch.
rolled a 1 on a declared attack with a bow, trying to take out the enemy general.
my arrow bounced around the battleground in a merry fashion before landing dead center of my ranger’s right buttock.
it was elevated from funny to awesome by the GM’s description, which took a couple minutes.
That’s a keeper GM. 🙂
Boomm! “You will come out no more!”
“What?! What will come out no more?!”
Lol! I love that movie. I bet Egg Shen would kick ass in this dungeon.
jumping over molten rock at a gazillion degrees wearing a loincloth? the monster may have been putting him out of his misery.
when sam goes killer dm, look out!

Well, I bet, if there would be a fire-elementar-bound mage…he would make a dip =D

This broke me. If I do extra material in the book this appears in someday, I may draw that.
That would be amazing. I might as well retire from commenting now; nothing I say from this point onward will ever top this moment.
Wait….that’s a boy?
If we go by a strict reading of the rules (no, I don’t, just being devil’s advocate here) he is entitled to a fort save to stabilize and then, depending on feat choices, might very well be able to stay conscious long enough to make it through the rest of the dungeon utilizing the fact the he is now much smaller to avoid traps and pitfalls that would await full sized humanoids.

Yeah… No. You don’t get to roll to stabilise if you’re knocked below -10, and getting bitten in half clearly represents massive damage to that degree.

The death rate of seasoned gamers right off the bat is surprising. We’re down like 8 players within 3 strips or so right?
Dammit Dustin!
Dungeon Run is hardcore with a lot of Save vs. Death situations to keep the event moving and up the fear/excitement factor.
I can get behind that. How long would a game like this be expected to last in real time?
Actually wouldn’t lava/snack boy be 9 at this point guessing all of Dustin’s group died (5,) 3 of Dallas/Amy’s group, and now one of Mel’s group.
Also the store is only open so many hours, death ensure you’re not here dor days.
Yep, I counted wrong. My bad.
Yeah, it’s beginning to look like they won’t need to kill off the slow players by default after all.
Re: the alt text.
Actually it’s making me think of the Canadian Trapdoor Alligators from Something Positive.

Soooooooooooon
I can’t wait to see what it sounds like…when Dove cries.
AND IF HE DOESN’T:
How can u just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that’s so cold? (So cold)
why do they fight with each other…
I predict a table of girls and Dove being the only ones left. Dove actively TPKs when he realizes that the prize is about to be won by women better than himself. Something he refuses to accept in his worldview.
Can’t believe I’m the first to mention this, but… Brian, he didn’t have pants on at any point. Just a fluttering Crotchcloth.
Unless… Lava resistant pants in the dungeon somewhere. Look for them, and know true victory. Am I right?
The skin on his face being different than the legs and arms coupled with what looks like a wrinkle in a sleeve makes me think they’re wearing a body-stocking/long-johns thing under the tabard.
Balls of (molten) Steel
No, see, you effed it up.
Goodness Gracious, Great Balls of fire. That’s what we were looking for. I’m afraid you don’t win the million dollar prize.
Tell me that was a Bard that got eaten.
You know, if it was a bard the player will be fine. He should have a stack of bards pre-genned for situations such as this.
Hide behind the pile of dead bards!
Thought he said,”No teeth.”…… But seriously you really want to mess with them I still say The Dreaded Zimmer…… It’s so bad I’ve seen characters kill each other in game just to keep their character rep in tact….

That seems like a pretty stupid rule to me. It implies that lava does infinity fire damage – a frankly ludicrous idea.
You know if he had not yelled I’m going to make it he might have actually made it
Famous Last Words strike again.
