amy just keeps getting cooler. so very comfortable with who she is.
tamina may be an antagonist in this episode, but she’s universes away from philip’s pure evil vibe. actually philip’s name doesn’t really fit. as phil dick would tell us, ‘philip’ means ‘horselover’. philip is unlikely to be able to love anything but his own ego.
Tamina isn’t all that different from Brett, in behavior at a game which is explicitly competitive and FFA. I’m curious how she behaves at her home table, where being a team-player is more likely to be rewarded.
I recently returned from a trip to the Jersey shore and my son and I had celebratory combos in your honour Brian. All the flavours you can find on the floor of a pizzeria! Plus a 7 layered dip!
On the one hand, MegaBee, I agree completely. Affecting black/urban slang words when you’re neither black nor urban is much more likely to give offense than to be seen as cool or bonding behavior, unless there’s an established relationship. It’s an order of magnitude worse if one tries to go ‘all the way’ and affect the complete speech pattern. The problem is, the speaker comes off as inauthentic.
(I work in an ER in a disadvantaged area, so I’ve seen this happen. And I’m so white you could make a PB&J out of my flayed hide. I will neither confirm nor deny that I was the guilty party.)
On the other hand, I’ve been successful in creating a bonding moment by occasionally appropriating a little black/urban slang in an over-the-top, exaggerated white speech pattern. The exaggeration makes it Meta, which makes it funny. (Warning: YMMV) In Amy’s case, I can see that it’s possible she’s trying to do this very thing. “Celebratory headwear,” and “Allow me to…” are two tells.
The gripping hand is, I don’t think Amy has a Meta bone in her body. One of the things I love about her character is she’s delightfully unselfconscious, to the point of being almost naive. What you see is what you get, no deception, no hidden agendas, no reserve. I love Amy.
And, I love today’s strip. All three of my points are competing to create tension between Tamina, Amy, and me. Bravo, Brian.
They’re from such different worlds… I’m impressed with the writing here, even though it’s not a comfortable scene. They’re totally acting in character for who they are.
I still don’t know what Amy wants to trade, though.
Yeah, after reading some of the comments, I think I agree with a few of the… *ahem* politer comments. Since Brett’s not present at the tournament, she’s pretty much what I imagine that he’d be like in this situation. Taking out the competition, not giving the slightest crap what everyone else wants. She wants to win, and that’s the point.
It’s not like she’s pretending to be everyone’s friend, helping out… until the last possible second, and killing them all to take the prize. I imagine at a regular game she’s a lot like Brett. “Less talking, more looting.”
Hover-Text: Knowing is half the battle! Give a Hoot! Don’t Shoot… up…. wait. I think I mixed those up.
All I can think is the GI JOE PSAs.
Even better the fake ones on YouTube! 😀
CBS Cares!
I hope they destroy this women.
woman…
no… you were right the first time…..
wow that was awful of me
I applaud your awfulness.
Petition for a Crit-A-Licious t-shirt!
Petition for a Crit-A-Licious parody song and maybe video.
Motion seconded, motion carries. Brian, you have four weeks to comply.

…and now I want to see Tamina and Brett in a game, together.
Yes, but his ego is the size of a Clydesdale horse, and he rides it for all it is worth.
Yeah, Philip’s got his head shoved so far up his ass, the only thing he can hear is the wind whistling when he farts.
It must be something like this…

Who else remembers Osmosis Jones? 😛
Tamina is a cow that don’t deserve respect and the other players should team up and kill her character quickly…..

ALL THE FLAVORS
…actually that’s an appropriate response from Tamina in this case.
I’m not sure that I should be ok with it, but I am.
Oh, Amy, no. I know she means well, but you can’t just roll up to black people and bust out the Ebonics unless you’re already friends.
From personal experience: Truth

We are united in our love for Amy. The world needs more like her.
What is she asking to trade?
The headwear, I think. “Want to trade later?” I think is the question.
LMAO!
Bitch! You high!
Connect this strip with the last strip, and this feels like Amy’s totally trolling Tamina to set her up for something like this…

I know right. Amy’s is so much cooler.
Hats. Amy wants to trade headgear.
Also, Brian, best response to “You must be high” EVER! I have to remember that one.

Agreed.
Pizzeria? Ehh, I’m more fond of pretzel-and-cheese Combos, myself. Meanwhile, I think Tamina’s karma is about to catch up to her.
’bout to take a knee to the chakras
This is a bit out of left field, but did Amy go to college? (Also where does she work?)
You’ll see. Soooooooon. 🙂
Didn’t D.A.R.E. implode because it was found to actually encourage kids to do drugs…?
So yes, the odds are in favor of Amy being high 😉
