Dungeon Run: A Word
Uh oh…
In other news: The Karthun Kickstarter is up and already funded! Karthun: Lands of Conflict is a 160-page, full-color, system neutral hardback detailing the world of Karthun as seen in the comics of d20Monkey. I am still giddy and terrified it is all a cruel dream but for now I am going to enjoy every second of this. I have wanted to make this campaign setting for such a long time and now it is going to happen. With the project funded, we are working toward the first planned stretch goal of a GMs Guide to Karthun, a 160-page PDF with rules written by a group of talented designers, offering suggestions on how to use Karthun in systems like 13th Age, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, Fate Core, Dungeon World, and 5th-Edition Dungeons and Dragons! Check out the link below and to the folks who have backed the project, thank you so very, very much.

Honestly, that would not be an unreasonable reaction.
I’m really hoping this isn’t what it looks like.
Congrats on starting the kickstarter.
I checked it out and true to my word when I find out when you guys have the paypal thing set up Ill contribute enough to get a copy (plus the extra 15 to ship it to the frozen north).
Also congrats on already reaching the goal. Maybe even Ill buy the GMs guide if it reaches that goal.
A suggestion for another stretch goal if youre interested, a campaign book or something similar.
Im not sure of the feasibility of this with a rules neutral setting but I think the idea might be cool if that works.
At any rate congrats on the kickstarter, I look forward to tossing my money at it as well.
actually, i think a prewritten campaign would work well for this setting. it would give dms and players alike a chance to experience the world in a contained environment and learn how it works. The only stipulations would be which the campaign would be written for (i.e. 5e, pathfinder, etc)
The GM’s guide is a stretch goal, so if you’re pledging anything above $15 (the second level), you’ll automatically get it and any others.
And I’m gonna second the campaign book idea as a stretch goal.
Oh yeah? I didnt realize that the GM book came with it if it reaches that goal.
Thats even better cause Id be tossing in enough for the book.
Correction: when it reaches that goal since its only about five grand off as of me writing this.
also of note: its cool that some people agree, I think it would be interesting to see.
Really excited for this World to become a setting in my future campaigns. I’m just starting to make my own world (not to mention I’m still pretty new to D&D) and seeing something like this is just inspiring. I’m really excited to be a backer in your project. Best of luck to you!
On Kickstarter news: *shoves wallet against monitor*
On comic: …I’m hoping the worst of the talk is “This isn’t YOUR shop, boy.” but…This isn’t going to end well regardless.
My gut says “Yeah. This isn’t going to end well.”
My eternally optimistic heart says “Well, Pops is probably just wanting to get his son to ground before telling him good news!”
My brain says “Shut up heart. It’s going to end in tears.”
Maaaaan, I hope I still have money for this. I’d love to get a physical copy.
Man, If I have any money left after buying/insuring a car on Friday you better believe it’s going on Karthun! And shame on Mel, everyone knows that saying things like “It can’t get any worse” practically guarantees they will 😉
a) Eager for this to update.
b) Stretch goal idea: NOT system neutral crunch packets? D&D 5E and Pathfinder subclasses and feats, etc. I want it sooo bad…
woot. congrats on the Karthun startup, assuming i ever get paid again, ill definitely have to throw a donation that direction.
as for the story, like many others here, im hoping this isnt going the direction that it looks like its going. bad guy gets rewarded for negative actions, decent guy who bad guy pretty much walks over gets punished (and this seems to be a running motif with Sam and Phillip) im hoping that sam does get the whole ‘you cant talk to a customer like that spiel’ and then takes him aside in the back room, pops him a beer and says ‘damn, i was hoping to do that myself….but you took care of it for me…’
I admit, I dont like Dove. I dont like anyone who feels they have to bully their fellow gamers just to have a good time. i had to deal with a pair of brothers like that (Dan and Rick Hyle) who played D&D with our primary DM, Ken Erickson, when Ken’s sons still lived at home and played.
these were guys who brought things from campaigns long before our characters ever even heard of them, were practically demi-gods themselves, and anything we found that were worthwhile were extorted from us otherwise they’d kill off our characters (with cheap one-shot kills), stuff the characters body in a bag of holding, and then pack up and leave, since Ken wouldn’t give them any xp for killing a fellow player, they’d just settle to whatever we had on our character sheet, and then a few weeks later we’d get the sheet back from ken without anything we had, it got to the point that we all refused to play with them ever again, and if they showed up after we started, we just said ‘sorry, games over, time to go home…’ even if we’d only been there for a couple of hours.
bogus looking rolls, smarmy ‘im better than you are for X reason’ tones and rudness, pointless player kills (even if it WAS a pvp event) and having to ruin everyone else’s enjoyment if they dont get their way? hard for me NOT to see Dan and Rick in Dove.
“Boy, I dunno whether to give you a lecture or a medal, so you’re getting both.”
My Money is on something like “so you tossed out a rich gamer out of my store without asking me!” Congratulation Son you passed. Killing the Cheat with his own medicine and then kicking him out was a nice touch.”
On Karthun: I’ve finessed my finances in advance, so barring any unforeseen circumstances, I’ll be pledging.
On Sam: I’m hoping it going to be – “Why didn’t you throw that douche out sooner?”
There is no 5th edition of D&D, there is only “next”. For to be a 5th edition there have to be a 4th and since there is no 4th edition of D&D there can’t be a 5th. Ph’nglui mglw’nafh D&D-next Wizards wgah’nagl fhtagn.
Friday’s gonna be good, whether Pops chews Sam out or gives him an ‘attaboy.
Also, I’m going to see about reorganising my birthday wish list to back Karthun.
Yeah, if Pops sides with Dove on this one I’m going to hate him forever.
>_< In my opinion he's already on thin ice likability-wise because of that Lawful-Dbag Paladin nonsense. Like, I GET that it was a test, but they could have picked a better time than when Sam was trying to run a special module he'd been looking forward to doing for years.
Well, to be fair, it wouldn’t have been a test if it was easy. To have to deal with a Lawful Stupid Cheetobeard during something like that? He handled himself pretty damn well, which I think was the point.
Yay for POPS! I’ve missed him.
I’ve been waiting for Karthun pretty much since the strip Sam turned out to be making it. I’ve donated twenty dollars to the Kickstarter so far, but I’ll probably throw in a bit more at a later date if it looks like the stretch goal for the GM guide will fall short. I’m so excited about this actually happening that my boner has a boner.
Congrats on the comic, you deserve it my friend, as to this other stuff, either his father will be proud of him, or his father will want to burn him to the ground. taking bets on which way it’ll go guys?
Oi…now that the run is done; where the rules at, son?
Hmm… not as dark as I was thinking, so far… I can’t help but wonder…
I really want to see this go well, for Sam. If someone’s not a geek, they aren’t welcome in our shop, and Dove certainly fucking isn’t. They really should’ve refused him sale or entry in the first place, from where I stand.
I *really* don’t want to think that Pops is a dick. This seems like his earlier test, only in a real setting, and I think Sam passed with flying colours.
… you HAD to say it. One of the BIGGEST, BEST-KNOWN story triggers.
Somewhere, Elan has the urge to go, “Dun dun DUNNNN!” and he doesn’t know why.
Looking forward to adding to the kickstarter, really hope there might be more stretch goals (that get reached) gonna go for the $35 myself, sadly I live in the frozen wastes of Canada and the extra shipping bumps me up a bit 🙁
After a night like that, I really hope that the expected disaster is subverted somehow. I mean, we all know what this looks like, but…
