Charlie Dreadful
Chapter: Season Three
As promised, here we go right into the next arc! I’ve been hyped on this one for a bit and it should be good times.
I can also say that I am actually very happy with Mel’s look now (as of this comic). Hair, glasses, etc. I’ve always felt the need to mess with her look (not her style per se, her look) and now I’m happy. I hope you dig it as well.
On the gaming front: There are a ton of new games I either tried at GenCon or I’m looking forward to. I have big post on Monday covering these but in the meantime check out the commenter question below.
COMMENTERS: Tell me what new games you’re trying or excited about.
I just started DMing a 13th age game not long ago and am loving it.
I’m also playing in a Marvel RPG online game that is rocking my socks.
I’m longing to give DnDnext a whirl, but am having a hard time getting a group together to playtest. I’m also really enjoying the rules to Savage Worlds and would love to try out playing in that sandbox. And finally I love everything I’ve read about the simplicity and design behind Dungeon World, but with all these other games drawing my attention I’m freaking out trying to keep my gaming ADD under control. SO MANY GAMES, SO LITTLE TIME!
Nice! I foresee wonderful things from this arc.
Games I’m digging… well, aside from the shameless plug for my own Chaos & Alchemy, I’ve been having a lot of fun with Fiasco lately. Lords of Waterdeep is still really popular with my gaming group, too. And good old 4th Edition D&D has captured my attention recently – I ran a bunch of Ashes of Athas in the Dark Sun setting at TactiCon this past weekend and felt really energized by it.
I picked up my Kickstarter copy of Sentinels of the Multiverse at GenCon but haven’t had a chance to try it yet; I want to, though! I also have played one game of a cooperative deckbuilding game called Shadowrift that I’m eager to try again soon.

Sentinels of the Multiverse is awesome, I strongly recommend it to anyone that loves co-op games.
I recently lost my gaming group due to multiple reasons, but I’m hoping to get something together soon.
I agree that Mel’s looks just seem…right at this point.
And Doctor Doom definitely shits. He shits awesome and hellfire. And it comes from his every pore.
I keep hearing about Sentinels of the Multiverse from all over. I’m excited to give it a good look.
Jenga! Man it’s been years.
And yes, Mel looks great!
No… NOT JENGA.
That is Dread. It is a horror game, with a simple mechanic – the Jenga tower. To do something, you must pull a number of blocks. If the tower falls, then something BAD happens.
Now do you see? Creeping doom and horror, built into the very conflict resolution method! You know failure is imminent, and that you can only go so long. Dare you intentionally knock the tower yourself, to save a friend? When the fall happens, you will have a moment’s respite.. but that will likely be spent dealing with the problems.
Ok, this might be highly insensitive of me but…I’m kinda thrilled to see a blind guy DM. How does a narrative change when the person describing what you sense doesn’t have one of your senses? For that matter, does Charlie have trouble keeping his dragons straight? What’s the difference between a red, blue, or green dragon at that point? I think of fire when I picture a red dragon because I’ve SEEN fire glowing red. Is a red dragon made of crackling celephane in a blind mans mind? (no offence, just child like wonder at a world unknown to myself–it’s not about not seeing but never having seen. If I went blind tomorrow, I live a very different life then someone born without an optic nerve)
Personally I think Dread is the perfect system for a blind person. You KNOW when someone fucks up.
That and the GM doesn’t need to roll any dice.
I don’t think it’s insensitive at all, Don. I am intrigued by the idea as well and while I know there are many blind folks out there who run games of every shape and size. For me, Dread is the perfect game to ease Charlie into the role of a GM. I am really taken with Dread, especially after playing it at GenCon and I think everyone will dig this arc. Or at least I hope so.
I recently re-read the archive and was thinking about how perfect this game was for Charlie to GM, since there were no dice rolls. It was a good narrative choice.
I demo’d Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer at Gen Con and got really hooked on the game. I’ve been playing it on iOS ever since. A friend and I are going to split the cost of the tangible version and organize some Ascension nights starting next month.
Just bought and started a Gamma World campaign set in a Fallout inspired universe, where everyone starts off as a purestrain human based off of themselves within an SOS bunker. Once emerging from their home, they gradually turn into their mutated selves from overexposure to dimentional fluxes, radiation, temporal rifts, bad take-out food, accidentally causing a paradox with their own self from the past and future, that sort of thing. All in the hopes of finding a new home and starting over…. and taking down the local tyrranical ruler corperation as well. It’s been quite a blast so far.
DDDREEEEAAAADDDD!
I got to play this at Dragon*Con, and it was AMAZING! I can’t wait to see what how this unfolds.
They just released Red Dragon’s Inn 2 and I’m hoping I can get it and play it with some friends. I liked the first one quite a bit.
They released Red Dragon Inn 3 last year. This GenCon saw the release of the first 2 allies packs, Pooky the Vicious and Erin the Ever-Changing. Coming soon to an FLGS near you!
I once ran a campaign for a few friends that hadn’t played anything but DnD, dungeon crawl style, before, and I wanted to get them open to the idea of new systems, settings, etc. Thus, I set it in a large, pure air portion of the Elemental Chaos, with flying, magic steampunk cities, airships, and lot’s of floating rocks with ruins on them that mysteriously waned as they got more excited about the other aspects.
The Jenga tower as a resolution mechanic is phenomenal, but the questionnaire system truly makes the game work. You can pick up the book from Indie Press Revolution and you can find additional module books by Windmill Games Co. at DriveThruRPG.com. Search for Dread: Tales of Terror.
This comic has a story arc devoted to Dread. Yep… Lady boner.
