Lead from the Rear
Chapter: Season Two
I have a deep respect for the creators of D&D and I LOVE to hear or read stories about the exploits of some of Greyhawks first player characters (such as Tenser, Robilar, etc.).
Back in the day, henchmen were huge and to be honest, I’m shocked more players do not attempt such antics today (or perhaps they do and DMs today shoot them down more often than not).
Either way, you have to respect the enterprising (if not cold-blooded) nature of the forefathers of D&D.
Hooray, I’m finally up to date. Great comic, by the way. Brett’s such a jackass.
Yes sir, he is. 🙂
I’m happy you enjoyed your trip through the archives to get up to date. That is one of my favorite things to do when I discover a new webcomic. It provides an interesting look at how a creators art/writing style develops over the body of work.
I miss my henchmen. I really do. 🙂
From all the stories I’ve heard about old school gaming it sounds more like Paranoia than D&D.
Shit… now I have to change all my friends passwords.
my players still use “henchmen”, though they’re more like captives than henchmen. any opportunity they get to take advantage of some poor sap they do, and more often than not that person ends up dead or seriously maimed.
I did that to my players this weekend, sort of. Their guides died in the first round of combat, and the players went on to avenge them. Good times. 🙂 Admittedly, they don’t do the “henchmen” thing.
The BARD had the best system like this..
Summon an old man with a stick.. To find traps.. tHe hard way.
I’m actually DM’ing a home-brewed world where the players have the opportunity to get henchmen.
I shut those antics down straight away should they be abused. If a few of my players had it their way they wouldn’t even bother adventuring.
I’ve played AT&T since I was six (more than thirty years). I hate the d20 system and everything WotC did to every game they’ve ever touched, so I guess I’m relatively “old school”…
And I have never, ever, bothered with henchmen or followers. I always thought they were a complete waste of time. The purpose of D&D was for ME to have an adventure, not some imaginary employee.
“Fuckweasel is correct! Welcome to our kingdom!”
