The Sword of Healing
Chapter: Comics, Season Five
Full-disclosure: Â I have almost pulled a trick similar to this on a group. In some sessions there is nothing more dangerous than a piece of parchment.
With these few one-offs out of my system, the next arc shall begin on Monday!
See you then.
Hover-Text: and of course no one gives a rat’s ass about Ralph the Cleric. WHAT ABOUT RALPH?
Ralph makes me sick to my stomach
Hmmmm almost as good as a healing tablet, break on target to be healed dealing 1d8 points of damage to heal 1d6.
And THIS is why you always read all the directions before starting…
This is why I love this comic so much. The arcs are great and you put so much work into them, but it’s these one-off scenes that sell it for me. A moment of pure comedy at a table among players I could totally see happen in any number of games, leading to a story that would be retold for years afterward. Brilliant.
This reminds me of the Sword of Love/Healing from Fred Saberhagens’ Book of Swords stories. I remember the part where the protagonist (Mark?) or someone else jumps off a very high cliff while being chased with this sword impaled through them as they fall. At the bottom they then plunge the sword to each leg to reknit together their broken legs then gets up and fully escapes. At 12 yo when I read all those books it was the coolest thing! 🙂
Seriously-how the Hell does a Sword of Healing work? Or I guess a Healing Shiv, if you’re using the knife version…
How it works is it has to be a sword made of positive energy
Positive Energy also has the funny quality of causing you to explode if you ‘eat’ too much of it.
Can’t believe they actually read the directions!
RTFS !!!!
+1 to BK… These are what make the comic in my opinion.
Decades ago, one of my D&D buddies came up with a Dagger of Cure Light wounds. Dagger does 1d4 then cures 1d4. This was so that he could infinitely torture NPC’s for information.
Huh…maybe thats what they’re for?
It would make a LOT of sense.
Those things are multipurpose too. Remember, those spells have the opposite effect on undead.
It reminds me of the story of the infamous Head of Vecna. I you haven’t heard about it: http://www.blindpanic.com/humor/vecna.htm
And that is how the pen is mightier then the sword. I mean, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a ecent auto-impalign sword.
Note that an actuall (working) sword of healing (by the name of Panacea) featured in the Comic Flipside (slightly NSFW: http://flipside.keenspot.com/). Here is the detail page:

I’m pretty sure Cure light does d8+caster level (to a maximum of 5)
Though I had a DM give me a silver +1 healing burst dagger essentially it was like a flaming burst weapon except positive energy instead of fire so d4+1-1 damage and then healed d6 (more on a critical hit) so on average it healed more than it hurt
The DM was rather upset when I had it enchanted as undead bane and used it to kill undead
This was meant to be in response to Fumtu
We had a story like this once but it was a RIFTS campaign. There was a giant golem-like creature with a Huge sized Scimitar that radiated magic so we wanted it. So we ended up finsing out I think in the second round of combat that the golem and sword were linked, but refused to destroy it’s sword. Fifteen rounds of combat later we’ld dealt a combined total damage of 4368 Mega Damage to the thing and finally were forced to destroy the sword to end combat.
I say like this cause it involved loot and a sword… so yeah it’s kinda like it ^^;;
Hmmmm this idea *evil laugh* YESSSSS
I have heard stories for years about the M.A.C.E. group having a mace of healing did d8 healing but d6 damage, if you got lucky you could heal 7 hit points. If you did poorly you could take as much as 5 points of damage.
Harken back to the early days of hard bound books where the text was more important than the art.
Oriental Adventures or one of its supplements had a curing item similar to the Mallet of Luck. A forceful blow to the head bestowed healing at the cost of sub-dual damage. … Yay, I’m Healed. Boo, I’m out cold.
This page made me laugh out loud.
(I saw reposted on someone’s facebook and it took me a while to track it down.)
Been trying to catch up over the past few days. I do believe this is my new favourite strip. It legit made me laugh out loud, and I read it to a non-gamer and even they laughed!
Absolutely hilarious. Got me laughing out loud on this one.
